kf154 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Hi!My husband and I are planning to stay in Manhattan 4/12/12-4/15/12. We are looking to spend $100 a night, though I know this might not be possible. Looking for at least 2.5 star. We are okay with the possible long walk to the subway from MTE. These are the zones we like in order:SoHo/TribecaChelseaHell's KitchenMTELESMTWDowntown/FinancialESBTimes SquareMadison SquareIs it too soon to bid on these dates? Would our chances of a lower price be better closer to our trip? Thanks in advance for your assistance:)
thereuare Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 My husband and I are planning to stay in Manhattan 4/12/12-4/15/12. We are looking to spend $100 a night...Your budget is fairly low for this trip in the sense that if you were successful at $100 or less, there would be little risk of seeing rates substantially lower in the future, imo. When bidding 2.5* (or higher) in NYC you have at least ONE re-bid zones at each star level, so here is a 'universeal' strategy you can use:Select 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $65, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $70, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid $65, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $70, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, Chelsea, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $73, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $75, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, DT, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid $73, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $75, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, DT, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $78, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, Chelsea, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid $78, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, ESB, MTE, LES...Bid $83, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, HK, TS, MSG...Bid $83, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $85, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, TS, LES...Bid $88, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, MTE, MSG...Bid $88, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $90, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, MSG...Bid $93, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, TS, LES...Bid $93, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $95, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, MSG, MTW, DT, ESB, TS, LES...Bid $98, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100You can try the above at the 3.5* level and if rejected lower to 3* and if that too is rejected try at the 2.5* level... OR you can simply start at the 2.5* level is your goal is the least expensive 2.5* or better for this trip. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. kf154 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 Hi Again! Thanks for your help. I went through your links, and bid as suggested, starting with 3.5, then 3, and finally 2.5. No luck :( How long should I wait to try again? Or should I just find a way to increase our budget? Thanks again for your time.
Romelle Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 If you look at HOTWIRE for your dates, you will see you unfortunately probably have quite a ways to go. There was a 3 1/2* Downtown-SoHo for $148, and (possibly scary?) 2* Central Park for $131. You might consider finding and making some cancelable back-up reservations. Then you can calmly bid for a better deal right up to the last.Romelle
thereuare Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 It's up to you whether you want to wait it out and hope for lower prices in the months ahead, but sub-$100 may not be realistic for these dates. What is the best rate you're able to find at a conventionally booked room thru traditional booking channels? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. kf154 Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 I found The Windsor at $163 through booking dot com and Chelsea Star for $167 through Hotels dot com. Is this what you mean by traditional booking channels? I went to some actual hotel sights and the prices are way higher. I'm sure I could talk my husband into upping the budget a bit.
thereuare Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 Yes, that is what i meant by 'traditional' booking channels (where the name is provided before your purchase)I'm not familiar with the properties above, but both are 2* rated at the site i looked at... how high would you be willing to bid for a higher rated hotel? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Romelle Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 You've already cast a wide net with the multiple zones. Any chance you'd be willing to go a bit further with Jersey City? Another post in this area "Bidding Early or Bidding Late" by MartinH is considering that option. Romelle
kf154 Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 We'd definitely lower our star rating or increase our budget (or both) to stay in Manhattan. I think we'd even consider UES, UWS, possibly Harlem. My only concern with that is taking the Metro in the very early morning hours (Safe?). We tend to spend our time just wandering around mainly south of midtown.
thereuare Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 You can try, but i still think $125 may fall short...Select 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid $70, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $80, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, Chelsea, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, DT, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid 90, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $100, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, DT, HK, MTE, LES...Bid $103, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, Chelsea, ESB, TS, MSG...Bid $103, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $105, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, ESB, MTE, LES...Bid $108, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, HK, TS, MSG...Bid $108, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, TS, LES...Bid $113, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, MTE, MSG...Bid $113, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $115, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, MSG...Bid $118, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* MTW, DT, ESB, TS, LES...Bid $118, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3.5* Soho, Chelsea, HK, MTE, MSG, MTW, DT, ESB, TS, LES...Bid $123, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $125Once again you can try the above at the 3.5* level and if rejected lower to 3* and if that too is rejected try at the 2.5* level... OR you can simply start at the 2.5* level is your goal is the least expensive 2.5* or better for this trip.If the above is rejected, a realistic goal might be to match the price of your back-up reservation but for a higher rated hotel. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Good luck and let us know how it goes.
