I'n new to Priceline and would like to use Priceline to bid for New York hotel over Xmas 2012.

A 3.5* or 4* hotel in ESB, MTW, MTE, MSG/Convention or SOHO in the order I gave zones is my aim. My budget per night is up to $140. It would be great to get a 4* for my budget but would be happy with a 3.5* too. My dates are 12/23/12-12/26/12 (3 nights). From reading Priceline hotel list I would like to try to win an Affinia hotel, the Shelburne being my number 1 choice. Think Affinia is in ESB area?

Any help with a bidding strategy would be appreciated.

You can't bid on a specific hotel when using PRICELINE, you have to be able to accept any hotel in the zone at the star level (or higher) that you choose.... there is no way to target any particular hotel in the zone.

With the above noted, are you willing to pay more to stay in the ESB zone vs. the MTW zone vs. the MTE zone, etc, etc... or is your first goal the least expensive 4* in any of the zone(s) you've listed above?

I'm willing to pay up to $140 per night to stay in a 4* hotel in the ESB zone. If unsuccessful in ESB happy to try for a 4* hotel in MTE, MTW, MSG, Soho etc. If still unsuccessful for a 4* in any of the zones happy to try for a 3.5* hotel starting off again with ESB.

OK, so a 4* in ESB up to your limit, if that is rejected then a 4* in any of the listed zones. Assuming this is correct:

At the 4* level in NYC you have SEVEN re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* ESB...

Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 4* MTW, MTE, SOHO... (there are currently no 4* hotels offer in the MSG/Convention zone so not included here)

Bid $100, if rejected add ESB...

Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $140

Any questions feel free to ask. I think the above has a very good chance at landing a win, but if not, post back and we'll move on to a 3.5* strategy (or discuss further options)

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Hope this isn't a stupid question. If I'm unsuccessful with first set of bids starting off with ESB will I have to wait 24 hrs before starting off with the next set of bidding instructions eg. starting off with MTW?

If it is the Hotel Chandler it's working out at approx. $142 per night which seems like good value. No idea why there seem to be more hotels for my dates on the UK Hotwire website. I thought both the US and UK should offer same options. I would prefer to purchase through the US website but the 4* ESB hotel option isn't there.

I had convinced myself that the 4* Hotwire in ESB I saw on the UK Hotwire site was Hotel Chandler given the amenities description. I am delighted with the very pleasant surprise of the Affinia Shelburne which I won at $136 per night. It was the hotel I really really wanted. I had tried on Priceline bidding up to $134 per night but didn't get any wins for a 4*. As stated in previous post the amenities description was puzzling. I'm still confused how the Hotwire UK website show 51 hotels for availability and the US Hotwire website shows 25? Immediately after my Hotwire win I went back into the Hotwire UK website and the rate I had won was gone so feeling very lucky indeed. Thank you Betterbidding.com.

I following your bidding instructions but didn't win a 4* in any of the zones so I had a look at Hotwire (US) but didn't see anything of interest. I tried Hotwire (UK) and saw at 4* in ESB working out at $136 per night before taxes. Lack of amenities description was puzzling and through Trip Advisor research I thought it might be Hotel Chandler. I took the plunge and the 4* ESB turned out to be the Affinia Shelburne which I'm delighted with as it was the hotel of my choice. Thanks for all your advice :)
