fknb Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Hi,I need some help finding on a zone for visiting a son at Depaul. We normally stay at the Days Inn that is really close and give a fair discount for visiting parents. Lincoln park has few other reasonably priced choices. What would be a couple of other zones that are only a few minutes from Depaul? We will be driving.
AaronJB Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 A few different thoughts/options:1. If you're driving, the North suburbs (Evanston/Skokie/Niles zone or further North the North Shore zone) would be good possibilities - the Evanston hotels in the Evanston/Skokie/Niles zone do charge for parking, but the remainder of the hotels in these two zones do not, plus there's a lot of nice restaurant/shopping options in these areas.) This would certainly be more of a trip to Depaul (especially if you stayed in the North Shore zone), but very nice areas, free parking (most hotels in these zones, but not all) and more reasonable prices (on most days) than downtown or even Lincoln Park.2. Lincoln Park has few hotel options and because there isn't a great deal of competition, there are usually not the level of % discounts you see in the downtown zones.3. You could stay downtown, although hotel and parking would be more costly. What are your date/s of travel and desired budget per night?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
fknb Posted February 26, 2012 Author Report Posted February 26, 2012 March 3 and 4th.I would like to keep it under $85. including parking a night. How long of a drive in from the suburbs?
AaronJB Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Depending on exact location and traffic, you're probably looking at anywhere from a 30-40 minute drive from the North burbs, although in terms of the 'burbs further North, there is a really pretty drive that goes along the lake and through really beautiful neighborhoods (Sheridan Road, which winds through the North burbs and then into the city, where you can take Lake Shore Drive or other streets the remainder.) Otherwise, I'd just take the expressway in from the 'burbs.Unfortunately, HOTWIRE is showing only a 3* for $130 and a 1* for $93 in Lincoln Park. Downtown prices are reasonable for these dates, but hotel and parking (not at the hotel, but in a city lot, as hotel parking downtown is extremely expensive) could run a bit over your desired max. My guess is that you may be able to get a 4* for $55-65 in the River North-NMA or Millennium Park-Loop-Grant Park area on PRICELINE, then a city lot will be $25 + city taxes. In the Skokie-Evanston-Niles area (where the highest level is 3* and the possibilities at that star level are the Doubletree Skokie, Hilton Orrington and the Holiday Inn North Shore - the HI does get very mixed reviews), you're likely looking at $45-50, and free parking at the Holiday Inn or Doubletree, but not the Orrington. The two zones further North from the Skokie-Evanston zone (North Shore and Deerfield), you're likely looking at $45-55 (and possibly as low as $40-42 for a 3.5* in the Deerfield zone) for a 3.5* or 4*.If you were able to get a deal downtown, you could then take the subway (which is an easy, relatively brief) trip up to the Fullerton stop. That would be the most expensive option with the added cost of parking, but would involve the easiest trip to Depaul's Lincoln Park campus.Let us know what sounds best and we would be happy to offer suggestions on how to proceed.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

AaronJB Posted February 29, 2012 Report Posted February 29, 2012 It's understandable to be right near Depaul, but I will note that the 3* in Lincoln Park is $130 + parking - there's a 4.5* in the Mag Mile/Streeterville area downtown (I'm guessing the Conrad or Intercontinental) for $87 - the "L" ride up to Fullerton and near Depaul is 15 minutes or so, but feels like less than that, and parking at Navy Pier or a nearby garage would be $20-25ish.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
