This hotel looked nice and well kept when I arrived. It was fully booked and the front desk clerk lamented that all he had for me was a handicap room, which he said is just like any room with only some slight modifications in the bathroom.

There was trash stuck to the bottom of the bag in the can. Saving $0.02 by not replacing the bag?

The mattress cover was half on the bed and half on the floor. The sheet was upside-down. I had to make the bed. While doing that, I found the TV remote under the bed.

There was a kitchenette - a small counter with a sink (with apple peel stuck in the drain), a small fridge, microwave and coffee maker. No plates or silverware.

The bathroom had the handicap configuration, meaning a shower stall - no tub - with a showerhead way low and no curtain. The sink was small and had no counter around it, just a small stainless steel shelf hanging above it. I had to place my toiletries on the top of the toilet's reservoir. There was dry toothpaste on the faucet, and brown spots on the underside of the toilet seat.

The surfaces of the furniture were sticky everywhere in the room.

Finally, the wired Internet connection didn't work and the folks at the 800 support number couldn't help.

The next morning I packed up and left my bag at the front desk. I returned in the evening to another room.

I think I got upgraded, because the new card key had "Marriott VIP" or something like that on it. The room was larger and ten times nicer. It was thoroughly clean and well made. But the Internet didn't work... oh well, only had two nights left here, and all St. Louis Bread Company (Panera) stores offer free wireless.

And then a nauseating whiff hit my nostrils, something awfully strong and irritating like burnt rubber. I quickly discovered that this smell originated from the stairway, close to my room, where the stairs were laminated with some kind of rubber or plastic material that emitted this terrible smell, probably when it got hot in the St. Louis summer heat. So every time someone opened the exit door to go out or come in, the smell permeated the hallway and got into my room. Instant headache.

The room had a sitting area with a couch and a sleeper sofa; two queen beds; two TVs; a dresser; an open closet; iron and board.

The bathroom had soap bars and shampoo. Normal bathroom with tub and counter in this room.

Free parking, local and 800 calls, Internet, breakfast, USA Today (delivered to room) and WSJ (in lobby).

Despite placards posted in the elevator and public areas advertising free wireless high-speed Internet in the public areas, there was no signal anywhere. The front desk said the hotel does not have wireless... and sent me next door to surf at the lobby of the Residence Inn...

No additional taxes/fees charged, they didn't even ask for a credit card for incidentals.

All in all not a good experience and I won't be bidding 2* in this zone again.

:) My family and I stayed here on Sept. 1. Our room had one king bed and one sofa bed. The room was exceptionally clean. It had a small kitchenette of fridge, sink, and microwave. There were plates and silverware under the sink. The bathroom was very large and also very clean. This was also one of the quieter hotels we have stayed in even though it was fully booked. The continental breakfast was one of the best we've had. It included eggs, sausage patties, and waffles. The staff did a very good job keeping everything full. The hotel is also close to a very nice mall. Overall, we were very impressed with this hotel and would definitely stay here again.
