Need it for 18 days (June 16th - July 3rd), picking up and dropping off from LAX.

Needs to hold 2 adults, 4 children, and associated luggage.

I clicked the Priceline and HOTWIRE links given in many of the other posts.

Going to Priceline (via the link) now to try and figure this stuff out.

Any tips appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to BetterBidding!

What is the best rate (per day and total for the complete rental) you're able to find thru conventional booking channels? (try our Car Rental Checker to help with your search)

How much would you need to save to make a opaque booking worthwhile?

$46.42/day or $325/week, for a total of $1,003.27.

I'm aiming for $35/day x 18 days = $630. I'd like $30/day but don't think I'll be able to get that.

It's also confusing because some places seem to go by 24 hour days (thus I only need to rent for 17 days) whereas others use calendar days. We need the rental from approximately 3 pm on Saturday, June 16th until approximately 9 am on Tuesday, July 3rd.

Most (all?) companies should be quoting on a 24 hour day, not calendar day, not sure where you're finding it to be otherwise.

With time on your side i'd start at $28 and increase by ~$3 every 24 hours ($28, $30, $33, $35) which will get you up to your maximum bid in just a few days... trying for each car class. If each is rejected you can then wait a few days and start the bid cycle from the beginning again.

It's never a bad idea to book a fully refundable reservation in the meantime which protects you from having rates rise while you continue to hope for a lower bid acceptance from PRICELINE.
