stephanA Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I have been looking to fly to frankfurt to visit some family and have been monitoring prices for a few months. In the last few weeks they jumped by about $150. I am looking to go in Feb or March for about 10 days. The flights that were $630 are now $835. I have looked into flying to other airports such as Zurich,Dusseldorf, Munich, Vienna, Berlin, Turkey etc and then taking the train or a regional flight but the cost and time isnt worth the couple of dollar savings. What I have noticed is that Lufthansa flight 401 and 405 fly from jfk to fra at $835, however if you type in jfk to dub you get that exact same lufthansa flight to dub via fra for $450.2 questionsWhyy on earth is it almost double to fly a much much shorter trip to fra dub via fra?Would it be fair to bid $500 on a priceline flight from jfk to fra since that is the cost to fly to dublin? Id love to get that flight at $500ish but only take the 1st leg. It seems like a reasonable offer since it seems alot cheaper for the airline since I will only be going to 1 airport with 1 plane. I know the other option is to do a hidden city fare and skip the flight to dub and get off at fra with carry on only. Thanks in advance.
thereuare Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Welcome to BetterBidding!Whyy on earth is it almost double to fly a much much shorter trip to fra dub via fra?Could be lots of reasons, but the easiest to explain is competition for the route. If lots of airlines fly from JFK-->DUB then competition may being the fares down, whereas if not many fly the route JFK-->FRA then rates for that route may be higher, even though the DUB plane stops at FRA along the way. As well, do you need to get back home on this ticket? If so, you won't be able to get in mid-segment (and once you depart the aircraft without completing your full itinerary the rest of your flight segments will likely be voided)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
