Priceline Hotel: 5* Oahu Waikiki

I am looking for a hotel most likely in the resort category for a trip March 10-18th. When i checked out priceline it gave me the option of a 5* luxury hotel. In your priceline hotel list, it didn't list any hotels as 5*. Has nobody won from that category or is this a new category? I note that it doesn't say it would have a pool. Would the Outrigger Reef on the Beach fall into this category since the pool is under reno's during the month of March?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

A 5* hotel in this zone has not yet been reported to the board. It's been speculated that the Royal Hawaiian is at least one possibility, but there could be others as well.

Once you're ready to bid let us know the star rating and zone(s) you decide upon and your maximum bid, we'll then be able to assist with a suggested bidding strategy.

In the interim any other questions, feel free to ask.

Hi there, I was just curious of what bid I should start with for a resort in the Waikiki Marina area. I don't see any wins in that area. Do you think it would be similar to the Waikiki beach area of around $150?

Thanks!

Personally, I'd start at around $118 and hope for the Waikiki Prince for under $125.

Thanks for the response but I was looking at the resort catagory rather than the 4*. BB has the resort catagory as the following:

Resort Hilton Hawaiian Village

Resort The Modern Honolulu

Resort Waikiki Edition

Any ideas where to start bidding? Thanks.

Ok sorry about that. I'm still looking for what to start bidding at for a resort in the Waikiki Marina area. Is it significantly more than a resort in the Waikiki Beach area?

Thanks.

The two may be similarly priced, or the marina zone may be a little cheaper, but it will may come down to availability given that there are fewer Resort class properties in the Marina zone vs. the Beach zone.

We don't see the Resort level bid too often in the Marina zone, is there something in particular you're looking for? What is your maximum bid for this stay?

I have family staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, so I thought I could include that area as well if my bid didn't get accepted in the Waikiki Beach area. I was hoping to spend around $150 night.

Have you tried bidding for a Resort class property in the Waikiki Beach zone yet? (if so, how high have you bid for a Resort hotel?)

Did you want to try bidding for a Resort first up to your limit, then if rejected try for a resort in the Marina zone OR is your goal the least expensive Resort property in either of these two areas?

I would prefer the Waikiki Beach area but was only asking about the Marina area as I have family staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I decided to keep my bidding to the Waikiki Beach area as it's my area of preference. I would like to keep my maximum bid to under 160/night. I tried bidding today for March 10-18 @ $125/night that was rejected. When the rejection screen came up I was about to try bidding including an area that did not have a resort star level but I noticed that 5* was checked off already in addition to my resort and I didn't want to chance winning at a 5* level as no where does it indicate that there is a pool in a 5*. I've never used PRICELINE for Hawaii before so I was a little thrown off to see that.

I will try again tomorrow. I notice that HOTWIRE has a 4* for $178 currently so I would like to get something cheaper.

Thanks!

Priceline considers the Resort level between the 4* and 5*. Also, when one is bidding a certain level, Priceline has the option of upgrading to a higher level.

So, when you are bidding Resort level, 5* is higher. Because you can be upgraded to 5*, that level also gets checked off.

The Royal Hawaiian thereuare mentioned as the possible 5* hotel does have a pool.

I think you're safe with 5* having a pool in Waikiki, don't let that stop you.

Isn't it funny that it doesn't list it? I'm trying to even think of a hotel that doesn't have a pool in waikiki and no where in my mind would I think a higher end hotel wouldn't have a pool.

The star rating descriptions are written generically to cover all possible scenarios and not zone specific, so for example, a 5* hotel in NYC will very likely not have a pool.

While all possible 5* hotels in Waikiki may very likely have a pool, should you receive something unexpected that does not have a pool, you would have not recourse (since a pool was not promised as a guaranteed amenity for a 5* hotel). As with other aspects of PRICELINE, it's a calculated risk (which in this example may be a low risk... in other aspects (such as bidding for one room for more than double occupancy) the risk may be more considerable)

So I tried again today for a Resort in the Waikiki Beach area at 130 no luck and on the rejected page automatically had included the 5* again so I just went with it.

I added:

Waikiki Central @ $132 - rejected

HNL @ $134 - rejected

Diamond Head @ $135 - rejected

Executive Center @ $136 - rejected.

Will try again tomorrow! And I used your PRICELINE links to do my bidding, thanks! :)

Your 8 night stay is long enough, I wondered if maybe you were running into some problem nights (unusually high rates).

Hotwire only had 4* for Waikiki Beach, so it isn't a great comparison, but still an interesting pattern.

Full stay $176

One night at a time:

10 $167

11 $138

12 $138

13 $194

14 $194

15 $167

16 $176

17 $177

If you do split your bid into a couple different parts, you do of course risk getting different hotels and having to move. The positive way of looking at it is you get to enjoy two different places.

it might just be that those two high middle nights ($194) are causing the problem even on Priceline. You could bid the first 3 and then the last 5, the first 5 and then the last 3, or even break it further into 3-2-3.

Just a possibility for you to consider.

This is our first time traveling with our 9 month old so I think risking having to move between our stay is not worth the money savings.

I tried bidding again today within the same zones up to $147 all were rejected.

My guess is that you're likely looking at $155-$165 to be successful for these dates. You can/should continue to work your way higher, but you may want to increase your bids by more than $1 increments at the current low probability bid amounts.
