Priceline Hotel: Resort Cancun - Cozumel (Hotel Zone South) Westin Resort and Spa

I'm trying to book a hotel through Priceline for Cancun/Playa del Carmen but have a question.

There are a lot of hotels in this area under the Resort category. If I bid on a 4* or 5* category, does this include the Resort properties? It seems like they "upgrade" some bids to Resort wins. In other words, is "Resort" considered above 4* and 5*?

I really want the 5* Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach or 5* JW Marriott (previously Resort) but I'm concerned on my bidding strategy if this includes Resort properties.

I'm worried I'll win the Westin or some other undesireable Resort property.

The zone hierarchy is as follows:

5*

The star rating you select is the minimum that you're willing to accept. So if you choose 4* then you could be upgraded to a 'Resort' class or 5* hotel. If you choose 5* and win, you'll receive a 5* hotel (as per PRICELINE's rating system) since that is there higher star level offered so there is nothing to upgrade any higher. (to just go 'full circle'... if you had selected Resort then your bid could be upgraded to a 5* hotel)

Perfect, that's what I needed to know. I would like a 5 star in Cancun Hotel Zone and Cancun Hotel Zone South for the nights of Jan 20, 21, 22. With this info, looks like I have plenty of rebid zones (I count 9), and the going rate seems to be around $95 - $100.

I'm still trying to figure out the other part of my trip before I start bidding. Trying to stay around Playa del Carmen Jan 17, 18 and 19th but doesn't seem to be a good strategy or many on the Priceline hotel list. Trying to stay below $110 a night.

I tried for about a week to win a 5* in the Hotel Zone and Hotel Zone South bidding to a maximum of $115 each time - no luck.

With less than a week to go I added more categories. I started with the Resort category for all the Playa locations and bid up to $100 (these were guaranteed All Inclusive so wasn't expecting to win this low). Then added 4* for all the Playa locations and bid up to $60.

Went back to the Cancun Hotel and Hotel South zones and finally won at $65

$65 ... 1/17/12-1/20/12

Looks like mixed reviews on Trip Advisor, not necessarily the one I wanted but pretty cheap I guess.
