I had hoped this would be the RIU Palace or better,(Secrets Capri, Azul Fives) based on pricing, however the description "8.5-21 miles from city center" leads me to believe it is not Playacar at all and my worst case scenario would be the Hacienda Tres Rios. I'm afraid to bid on this location.

The mileage distance shown is from the center of the zone to the location you included when you initiated your search, not the mileage from the specific hotel you'll be receiving. I'm not sure what city you used to initiate your search, but if you go back to HOTWIRE and search again, using 'Playa del Carmen' for the city location, you'll see all results in the Playa del Carmen-Playacar show a distance of 0-11.0 miles. If you then search again for whatever city you used previously, you'll see that all offers in this zone show the same mileage distance (since it's not hotel specific, but specific to the center of the zone)

If you're looking for a specific location, i'd give our recently re-done MAPS and HOTELS.com a look as it give an excellent view of hotels close to a specific location, and makes it easy to see how much more/less it would cost if you go up/down in star rating OR further/closer to your specific location.

I got the Hotel Marina El Cid. I am not thrilled , but having never stayed there before I can't complain about the price. It is in an ideal area, and a 3 day stay tacked on to two other resorts we have booked. To be clear, here are the amenities listed. I do notice a difference in the premium alcohol. The ammenities listed for the El Cid say premium is available for additional $$.

Follow up: I decided against the risk on this one and booked the 4* Puerto Morelos currently being offered (new offer) for May 16-19 2012

Listed as reg $367 for $151 per night. It is the Hotel Marina El Cid. Other websites list it at $225 per night for those dates. I did book through the HOTWIRE link here.

Wierd - it is now Reg. $347 for $148 per night.
