Welcome to BetterBidding!

We'll need a bit more info to move forward...

Please clarify:

I need two double/twin rooms at a hotel in York for one night on 31st Dec.
If i'm reading correctly, you need two rooms. Do you need two beds in each room OR does the room simply need to be able to accommodate double occupancy?

What is your desired star rating? If less than 4* and within your budget, are you willing to pay more for a higher rated hotel OR is the goal the least expensive hotel at your minimum star rating the desired goal?

What is your maximum bid in US Dollars?

Two people in each room. Not bothered if its two beds or a double bed

We are so past having a desired rating, we just need something booked. Ideally looking at 3/4*

What is your maximum bid in US Dollars?

$140 per room

Thanks for replying. I have been resisting the urge to just go ahead and place a bid all day but thought it best to wait for advice.

I don't know much about this area, but I suspect this may be a difficult nite given the New Years Eve holiday... many hotels can get at or near full occupancy on their own and therefore don't need to offer deep discounts to the opaque suppliers.

To give it a go i would try the following:

Select 4* York...

Bid $100, if rejected lower star rating to 3*...

Bid $80

Every 24 hours repeat using the following price pairs:

$110/$90

$120/$100

$130/$110

$140/$120

$140/$130

$140/$140

Any questions feel free to ask. After a week you'll know where you stand at this price point and still have time to adapt accordingly or make alternate plans.

If the above is rejected, do you have a back-up plan anywhere near your budget?

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

For a back-up plan, you might look at www.booking.com. I'm also not familiar with the area, but there are a couple places within your suggested budget that at least look possible. And they are cancelable if you happen to get lucky with Priceline.

There is one hotel with possible $$s that shows up on both Hotwire and hotels.com, and a couple more on cheaptickets.com

The HOTWIRE link is in the upper left hand corner. Under the "Support Page" up above here are links to hotels.com and cheaptickets.com.

Thanks for your replies and advice.

We had a go yesterday, and although unsuccesful I did enjoy it and will be trying Priceline again in the future on dates that are not quite so popular.

We did not have the time to spend a week trying different prices as we needed to get something booked ASAP.

This is what we tried, using my account and my partners. (In GBP)

4*/3*

60/50

70/60

With taxes on top that was really as high as we wanted to go.

This was my last hope and I had given up on York last night, but luckily for us a 3* guesthouse must have had cancellations and appeared on Trivago today. We have managed to get 2 rooms booked at

Sorry I missed this.

There is quite a few bed and breakfasts available on booking.com, the thing is most of them want stays of a minimum of 2 nights. In fact this was the problem with most the places I found.

I do appreciate you having a look though.
