I'm attempting to book a hotel in San Diego (sept 3-10) through Priceline - I say attempting b/c all of my bids have been rejected thusfar. I have been looking in the San Diego area (Coastal and Downtown), lowest star rating of 2.5 and highest price I've bid is 75. Is there no hope for me? Would going down to 2 stars help? I'm a little leery of trying a 2 star since I haven't seen any of the names listed on this web site.

Does anyone know what the 2 stars on pl are for san diego and what I should expect to pay? I would hope that a 2 star wouldn't be much more than 70, but maybe I am completely out of touch! Help!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Rates are a bit higher than usual for these dates and your bids are lower than we usually see acceptances in these zones. Do you have any type of back-up reservation near your maximum bid amount? Have you considered SPLITTING YOUR BID?

Let us know the above and we'll advise on how to proceed.

I do have a back up hotel (Super 8 Bayview in Littly Italy runs around 70), but I was hoping for something a little nicer. And I have considered splitting my trip up to do Sept 3-6 one location and the 6-10 in another. I'm not really up for splitting it up even further since that could mean changing hotels 6 times!!! I may end up bidding on Hotel Circle since I've noticed the rates there are lower.

Do you think there's any point in trying for a 2 star in the price range I mentioned or should I just stick with my back up at this point? I was hoping to find a deal given that it's far out, but I guess the Labor Day factor is really adding $$$.

Thanks for the feedback!

Your bids are too low during 'normal' times, so add to that the increased demand(?) for the holiday weekend and there is no reason for hotels to load lower rates into the opaque systems.

Then add in the length of your stay... rates only need to be higher for one nite of your stay and the entire bid will be rejected.

So i think the above issues are enough reason to explain your rejection(s).

This also appears to be an area where there is very little price difference between star quality of hotels... so if you could raise your maximum bid i think you could have a much better chance at receiving a much higher rated hotel (although as mentioned previously, rates are a bit higher than usual).

Only you can answer if it's worthwhile to bid on a 2* property... how good/bad is the Super 8?
