Hotwire Hotel: NYC-July with kids

Hi, I'm new to all this so would really appreciate any help you can give.

My wife and I want to take our 2 kids, aged 9 and 11, to NYC next July 2012.

The flights seem to be best for 20th to 25th so I'm looking for a hotel for those dates.

I've no idea where or what hotels to look for but obviously want somewhere suitable for us that is not a pain to do sightseeing touristy type stuff from.

Our last trip to Florida we have stayed in suites, like the hilton ones with free breakfast, and they were great. I don't know if NYC has such things.

I've read the FAQ and tried to get through it but am still not sure what I'm looking at when I see the search results.

PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, after that it's at the discretion of the hotel, and you could receive a room with only one bed. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request... and this is substantially more difficult in NYC where rooms are notoriously small and the majority of rooms only have one bed. Is this a risk you're willing to accept?

If not, HOTWIRE may still be an option as they allow you to search for up to quad occupancy and ensure sleeping accommodations for everyone you include in your search (although this usually means two beds, the second 'bed' could be a sofabed, rollaway, etc) If you search HOTWIRE for 2adults/2children does anything appear within your expected budget? What is your target budget for the hotel portion of this trip?

Not sure which hotels these might be or how suitable they are for families doing touristy stuff.

Please go to HOTWIRE and change your deafult currency to US Dollars (using the drop down menu on the top right of their page), close that browser, then click a link on the board here to go to HOTWIRE. Best guess for the above:

2.5-star hotel Chelsea

The Best Western Convention Center has previously been seen with this amenity set but at the 2* level, i'll speculate that it may have been upgraded to the 2.5* level since last reported... but hard to say so with any degree of confidence given just these two amenities.

2.5-star hotel Downtown - SoHo - Financial District

Sohotel reported with just an Internet icon, but last report at the 2* level. Same situation as above... possibly upgraded to 2.5* since last reported, but with just an Internet icon, which most NYC hotels have, it could easily be something else as well.

3.5* Chelsea - Madison Square Garden area hotel

Business Center, High-Speed Internet Access, Fitness Center

Only one of the hotels above has a Breakfast icon... are you filtering results by this amenity, as the Downtown property doesn't appear with an internet icon.

What is your target budget for the hotel portion of this trip?
