Was rejected on a 4* Jersey City bid for one night on 11/12 for $140.00. I see other bids for that amount and less that were accepted. Any ideas? I can't bid again for 24 hours without changing my area correct? Thanks!

In terms of re-bidding opportunities, please see this thread (re-bidding) for a discussion of the re-bidding process.

This date does seem a little on the busy side, as while rates are not extremely high, they are a touch high and HOTWIRE is showing no 4* available in the area. What would be your desired max budget per night?

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Once you add taxes and fees it's not much different that my bid. Maybe I should just book it through Expedia?

Not really true... as a $140 PRICELINE bid would come to ~$170 all-in... a $199 Expedia purchase would come to ~$227 all-in... still $57/nite difference between the two, which is not that insignificant for a one nite stay, imo. So it comes down to how much you feel you need to save to make an 'opaque' purchase worthwhile?

The issue though is that the Expedia rate appears to be a limited time sale, so if you choose to wait and rates don't come down, you could be faced with higher prices down the road (even if prices remain the same but the sale ends)

However (more food for thought :) ) at $199 for the Westin in Jersey City, i think you could get a 4*hotel in Manhattan for ~$225, and Manhattan would be worth the extra $25/nite, imo (assuming that is the reason for you being in the area)

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. (or our Expedia link if you decide to go that route)

If you need help with a bidding strategy let us know your maximum bid (if you're willing to go a little above $225 or if that is your maximum) and if MTE, MTW, ESB, TS and CPS are all acceptable zones... we'll then suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Otherwise, let us know how your bidding goes.

Good luck.

Using the Priceline Re-Bidding Explained thread referenced above, see if you can determine your FIVE re-bid zones when bidding 4* in NYC... if not post back and we'll break it down further for you.

Is Times Square the only zone you're willing to accept OR are the other 4* hotel zones which are frequently bid acceptable as well?

Have you identified your FIVE re-bid zones or need help in doing so?

Also, i see you're not including ESB and/or CPS in your bidding, and these are generally considered well located for the average user... are these not acceptable for your plans this trip or are there hotel(s) in either zone you're trying to avoid?

Any ideas for help?

We've asked a few times if you understand and/or have identified your re-bid zones, but you continue to just move forward and report your latest failed bid.

To bid systematically and not risk overbidding you need to take a few minutes to understand and utilize your re-bid zones. Have you identified your re-bid zones OR is there a part of the concept you're having trouble understand? If you're having trouble determining your re-bid zones feel free to ask the board for help and we can break it down for you, but i wouldn't continue your current piecemeal approach, as it could result in an overbid.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed.

Maybe I am not doing it right and don't understand. I have to change something to bid again so I add a zone and increase the price. I don't remove the other zones, just add new ones. TS is where I ideally want to be but MTE, MTW, HK, CPS, would also work. That would be my 5 re-bid zones right? This is what I did on my last few bids for a 4*

MTW, TS,CI - $170

MTW,HK,TS - $175

MTW, HK, TS, MTE - $182

MTW,TS, HK,MTE, -$185

MTW,TS,HK,CPS -$187

Thanks for your help.

There are two types of zones:

1) Zones you're willing to accept

2) Re-Bidding zones

--> re-bid zones are zones which you don't really want, but which you can add to your bidding since they only have star ratings lower than the star rating you're bidding for

When bidding 4* in NYC you have FIVE re-bid zones. To determine your re-bid zones you want to follow the technique in the first post of this thread: Priceline Re-Bidding Explained. If you read that thread and are confused, then do the following and we'll break it down further for you:

1) Use the PRICELINE search box on the upper right of this page, enter New York City and your dates, and click "GO".

2) List each zone that is offered in this region.

3) Next to each zone list the highest star rating offered in the zone. The way to determine the highest star rating offered in the zone is by selecting the first zone i the list, then scrolling down to see the highest star rating selectable (ie- not greyed out). NEXT UNcheck the selected zone, place a checkmark in the next zone, and repeat the process for each zone in the region. Each time you take note of the highest star rating in the zone, make sure that only ONE zone is selected above.

4) post your findings and we'll take it from there

If you don't follow the above just post back and we'll break it down further.
