Priceline Hotel: NYC 10/28-11/5 3.5*-4* - need advice

I have booked plane tickets to NYC arriving Friday 10/28 and departing Saturday 11/5, now need to get a hotel.

I am meeting a friend who is staying in a hotel in Chelsea, so ideally I would be close by, but it's not critical. I would like to be in downtown manhattan though.

I just tried submitting several bids, ending up at $160 bid price with CPS, ESB, Chelsea, MSG, Hells Kitchen, MTW and TS selected, 3.5* selected with no success.

Can anyone suggest some strategies or give an opinion what $$ it would take?

Hotwire shows a 4* in Times Square for $248/night (not sure what hotel it is), so I am hesitant to go too much higher and wind up in a crappy 3.5*, especially given Priceline adding $300 in taxes and fees which comes to $35/night on top of my bid price already.

Should I split my bid since it's a long stay? Should I wait until closer to my trip? What is a realistic price for the above zones in my time period?

I assume you mean midtown as that is where most of these zones are located... Downtown NYC is the southern most part of Manhattan.
