snevillio Posted October 11, 2011 Report Posted October 11, 2011 I have the flights already booked so i guess there is no time like the present for looking at hotels. The flight gets in at about 11pm on Saturday 17th December so with the transfer time i don't mind if we're in a hostel for that first night, especially if any potential deal will be thrown off by a saturday night stay. Therefore i'm after three nights Sun 18/12 -Wed 21/12 in 4 or 5* accommodation. Have looked at the priceline regions and seems to be City Centre South is closer to Marienplatz which i'm led to believe is a good and vibrant area so this would be my preference.Reviewing some of the successes on here it seems that a 5* in City Centre North (Hilton Munich Park) can be plucked for $80 per night and a 4* in City Centre South (Hotel Maritim) can be plucked for $85 per night. The 5* success is actually at the same time of year as we're looking at so i'm thinking that the 4* one might accept a lower rate at this time of year.Bearing all of this in mind i was going to make my first bid today and i wanted some advice on how to start, i don't particularly understand the whole rebid options but as i'm not going for a few months i don't mind waiting 24 hours and resubmitting incrementally higher amounts.I was thinking of starting with City Centre South 4/5* @ $65 per night (i will be booking two rooms if it makes a difference), does that sound like a reasonable starting point?

yankeepeddler Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I'm not sure if you've booked your room by now or not, but here's my two cents ,,,, We went to Munich in July for a week and paid $85/night to stay at the Munich Marriott on Berliner Strasse (4 stars). There's no harm putting in low bids to start - you can always re-bid after 24 hours. That having been said, we were delighted with the Marriott - great staff, It was a short walk from a U-Bahn station - maybe less than 10 mins to Marienplatz and had a convenient grocery store around the corner. Don't get your hopes up for a cheap hotel in Marienplatz - VERY expensive area. Happy bidding.
snevillio Posted December 6, 2011 Author Report Posted December 6, 2011 Thanks for the advice, i ended up not booking through priceline because i just couldn't get the right deal at the right time. There seem to be bi-monthly $5 offers off each room for each night and there was a special cyber-monday offer of $10 off per room but i just wasn't able to get the kind of deal i wanted over the time period. Essentially i couldn't get a 4/5* for less than $70 per night over a month and a bit of trying so i eventually ended up booking through Expedia and taking advantage of a 10% discount rate which worked out close to what i wanted to pay.I think i'll definitely use priceline in future, i felt a little bit bound on this one as it was my first attempt and i didn't want to lumber my travelling colleague with a dodgy hotel but next time i go anywhere i'm definitely using it!I'm not sure if it helped but i kept a regular tab of median hotel prices in the areas i wanted by star ratings to see if prices changed much, i went on the logic that if prices changed (and they seemed to on a weekly basis) that another hotel had added/withdrew rooms to the stock so perhaps the prices could have fallen. Interesting stuff anyways!
