cready Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Booked the W New York Hotel in Midtown East today for Friday 12/2 - Sunday 12/4 for $290 after about 5 tries starting at $270. This is approx 30% off the starting rates that I found online for those dates. Thanks to the tips in this forum!
AaronJB Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)Very good deal for what is usually one of the most expensive weeks of the year (last few days of Nov/first week or so of December.)Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
KennySC Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 It will be interesting to watch amd see if rates come down once we get within 10 days or so. This hotel might not but i predict others will.... They say "Patience is a Virtue!"... Time will tell... I'm going to be bidding on December 2-5 and will bid something today since i'm getting a $5 bonus today only.
AaronJB Posted November 16, 2011 Report Posted November 16, 2011 There's no way to know, but traditionally the period around 11/25-12/10ish is prime time for holiday shopping and festivities and is definitely one of the year's most expensive.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches, and please keep us updated.

KennySC Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Some also say "early bird gets the worm" ;)Well it seems someone just got these dates and the same hotel and saved $69/day. :)
thereuare Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 Well it seems someone just got these dates and the same hotel and saved $69/day.Not exactly...I belive this is the Priceline hotel win you're referring to, and that user's purchase was for Fri-Mon, 12/2-12/5, whereas the purchase for this thread is Fri-Sun, 12/2-12/4.While the dates are similar and overlap, Sunday nite is typically the slowest nite of the week for hotels (and in NYC in particular) as business travelers have not yet arrived and tourists have already headed home. Therefore, Sunday nite is usually the least expensive nite of the week. If you check rates for the dates we're referencing at this hotel, the Sunday nite is indeed less expensive than the other nites, so a 3 nite stay which includes Sunday can bring down the average cost for the total stay, and therefore a lower bid could be needed for the 3 nite stay vs. only bidding for the first 2 nites.Regardless, rates for the 2 nites above currently average $569/nite, so i think a $290 successful bid would still be cosidered a 'pretty good win'. KennySC Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 I totally agree the $290 compared to regular rates is a very good win. I was just using it as an example of how you really need to be patient in bidding NYC this time of year. If you've got the nerve to wait and be patient you may be able to secure a great deal or you might be in a 2* in Hoboken! :)Go Urban Myers!! :)
thereuare Posted November 23, 2011 Report Posted November 23, 2011 I was just using it as an example of how you really need to be patient in bidding NYC this time of year.I thought my explanation explain how this wasn't an example of how being patient paid off... as it's an apples-to-oranges comparison since the dates are not the same, and the lower rate you're referring to includes a lower priced nite. KennySC Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 I thought my explanation explain how this wasn't an example of how being patient paid off... as it's an apples-to-oranges comparison since the dates are not the same, and the lower rate you're referring to includes a lower priced nite.I guess we will have to agree to disagree. The one night was yes a lower priced night but wouldn't, in my OPINION account for the huge drop in price. This is also an example of how on discussion boards you're sometimes not entitled to ones own opinion. If you go to the W website the average rate for the 2 night stay is $589 (two singles) and the rate for the 3 night stay (which includes Sunday night) is $563. That comes to a difference of only $26 so i believe the $69 drop partly includes being patient. I also feel it will be cheaper as we get closer. Time will tell. I respect your opinion but not sure it goes both ways. Back to baking my turkey. :)
thereuare Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 This is also an example of how on discussion boards you're sometimes not entitled to ones own opinion.I think we'll have to disagree on this point as well... your opinion is exactly as posted, remains in tact, and no banning for disagreeing ;)And i'm not totally disagreeing with your assessment (sorry if my post gave the impression otherwise above), it's certainly possible that the rate needed for the 2 nite stay has gone down, i just don't think that any conclusion can be made when comparing the 2nite stay vs. the 3nite stay.We are both also assuming that the OP used proper bidding strategy and didn't include MTE on the last bid (and therefore didn't try to win this zone at less than $290) Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
