Go Canada Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Looking for a 4* for New York City for Nov. 6th-12th not at all fussy about the area just not Brooklyn, Long Island City or Coney Island, would also be happy with a 3.5*, budget is the most critical parameter and I would like to get in for around the $200 mark. I am not sure what is holding the price up so high for these dates or if I'm just out to lunch on my prices, but I have already worked my way up to $230 for both 4* and 3.5* requesting the whole period and also Nov 6th-9th and Nov. 9th-12th and apparently haven't even gotten close enough for priceline to offer it to me if I just bump my bid x dollars. I have read the posting about bidding early vs. late but is there any prevailing theories here about if this situation is likely to get better as the dates get closer? Also any strategies? Thanks,Go Canada
thereuare Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding! The NYC Marathon is on November 6th (so if you're arriving to the city on this date, depending upon time of day and route, you may need to plan your schedule accordingly) and this is one of the annual NYC events which effects hotel prices in a big way.If you're willing bump your budget a little more HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel for your complete stay for $254/nite which i'm assuming is the St Giles The Court. As well, HOTWIRE has what i'm guessing to be the 3.5* rated Ramada New Yorker (the Doubletree is another option for the property offered) for $230/nite... but this is only 3* rated on PRICELINE (although something you may still want to consider as it gets pretty good reviews)The Hudson Hotel is also available for $237/nite, and this is 3.5* rated by both PRICELINE and HOTWIRE, but the rooms are notoriously small (~150 sq. ft.) so not sure if this is where you'd want to stay for almost an entire week, and i think either of the other two would offer a better value. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. Go Canada Posted September 29, 2011 Author Report Posted September 29, 2011 I had seen that on Hotwire, and now that I have wrapped my head around the idea of $250/night tiny hotel rooms the St. Giles looks like a good value comparatively. So I am not opposed to this but is there any likelihood that one could do better on priceline or are prices likely to be held up high in anticipation of filling up with the Marathon?
thereuare Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 ...is there any likelihood that one could do better on priceline or are prices likely to be held up high in anticipation of filling up with the Marathon?Nobody can say for certain... hotels price rooms based upon current occupancy levels and historical trends on how many new reservations, and cancellations of existing reservations, they expect between now and your dates. If actual reservations are stronger then expected and/or actual cancellations are weaker then expected... then rates will rise further. Should actual reservations be less then expected and/or cancellations are stronger then expected, then rates may drop somewhat. Go Canada Posted September 29, 2011 Author Report Posted September 29, 2011 Just won Manhattan Center Hotel for these dates for $170/nt. Had tried using rebid for 4* up to $250 with no luck and then just added 3.5* and dropped the bid to $170 and got it. I had tried all locations up to $230 for 3.5* a couple of days ago with nothing, now I am having buyers remorse and wondering if I could have gotten this for less. Oh well it looks like it is decent and in a good location.
AaronJB Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)I think this is quite a terrific deal for this property, which is showing as unavailable for this period as a whole, but the days that are available are - in terms of the basic room - $349 for M-TH and $269 for Friday. So, I'd say definitely not a bad deal at all for this period.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
