Hotwire Hotel: 4* Chelsea/MSG

Hello. I'm totally new to this site and using Hotwire or Priceline. I'm traveling to NYC for the first time on 10/19 and Hotwire has a 4* for $204 in SoHo/Fin District. It seems too good to be true. I'm concerned I'm going to end up in a questionable area. I'm traveling alone.

Originally I was looking at Chelsea or SoHo since they seemed more "neighborhoodish". But since it's SoHo/Fin district I'm not sure what to expect.

Does anyone have any advice on Hotwire? Should I be wary of this deal? The next closest deal at 4* and above is 4 1/2* at $344 and $366. At $144 to $166 per night difference, I'm not sure what I"m getting into.

Oh and it says the hotel is recommended by 90% of Hotwire cust reviews. And if I downgrade to 3 stars it's STILL the best deal/highest rated/lowest price. I'm so torn.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!!

After doing some digging I came up with the NY FAshion District Hotel....or maybe Eventi (prob not). When I look at the published Hotwire hotels/rates a rate is displayed in the preview listing and then drops when you click on it. If it's the NY Fashion District HOtel the prices is $384 then $332. The possible unpublished prices is $292. That doesn't seem like a huge discount. Published rate on their website is $369 for basic room.

Am I misunderstanding how these rooms are discounted? Is the potential 50% sort of like an ideal rather than a reality?

And I could be wrong totally on the hotel ID... :)

Hotels try to maximize revenue, and use the opaque suppliers to sell excess inventory they don't think they would otherwise be able to sell on their own. During slow times, a hotel may only be 50% filled, and a hotel may therefore offer a very deep discount just to get some revenue for a room that may otherwise sit empty. On the otherhand, if a hotel has 90% occupancy, they may not offer as deep of a discount (or any discount at all) as they may decide to 'roll the dice' that they can sell the room themselves at full-price.

So the deepest discounts are typically seen during low-season and nites of low occupancy... you're coming to NYC during a busy time of year, so hotels don't need to discount as much. While a 15% discount may not be too much, on a $350/nite hotel room it still amount to $50+ per day, which can be better spent elsewhere doing something fun in the city.

I"m back! So far I've booked (directly through the hotel) the Courtyard Marriott Soho. It was the best deal I could find so far and know for certain where I'd be staying. But it's still $365 per night....

I see on Hotwire there is still a 4 star in SoHo/Fin Disctrict with:

Fitness Center

Restaurant

Internet

Business Center.

85% Hotwire satisfaction level

Currently $292. Only one room left so could be gone by the time I write this.

I checked the hotel list and I see there are quite a few 4* in that area with those amenities. If I thought for a second it might really be the SoHo or Tribeca Grand or Smythe etc. I might go for it. But I'm worried I'll be much further south into the Fin district. I get the impression that in Oct the uber hip hotels don't need to sell on Hotwire and I'm going to end up in one of the more obsure Fin District hotels.

Anyone have any idea if it can be narrowed down, particularily given the 85% rating?

As always, thanks!

Kate
