Hello all,

Thank you again for your help last time in coming up with a bidding strategy for a stay in NYC. It worked out very well, and I'm back here again hoping to book another great deal.

This is what I'm looking for and would appreciate any advice going forward:

Dates: 9/29-10/1 (two nights)

Price: $125 base rate (am looking at max $150 including taxes)

Quality: 4* first, if nothing, then 3.5*, if nothing then 3*

Regions: At 4* level: CPS, Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MSG, MTE, MTW, TS.

At 3.5* and 3* level: Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MSG, MTW, TS.

I took out CPS and MTE at 3*-3.5* levels because of the small rooms and long walks from subway stations. Do these criteria seem reasonable? I know this is starting to become the busiest time of the year but am hoping that with the proper bidding strategy, I can get something within my price range.

As always, I will use the PRICELINE link so you guys get credit.

Thanks again.

While rates are not quite as terrible as most of the rest of the Fall, they are still high for these dates, and unfortunately I think you're likely looking at more towards the $200 neighborhood, although I'd start lower. 3.5*'s are likely going to run $150-185; 3*'s are likely going to be similarly priced. Additionally, small rooms are possible in all zones - NYC rooms in general are small, and it's not unusual to see rooms that are 160-190 sq ft.

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Thanks for your reply. I've seen posts where one of the moderators says the Hudson Hotel has notoriously small rooms, which is why I took off CPS. Could you please adjust the max bid to be $150 for this strategy instead... starting with 4* first?

Thanks.

We'll start with a 4* strategy, but i don't think your budget will be enough for a 4* hotel...

At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

(NOTE: currently there are no 4* hotels offered in the MSG zone so we have removed it from the list)

Select 4* Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MTE, MTW, TS...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $148, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Any questions feel free to ask. If rejected post back we'll look at a 3.5* strategy, assuming that is still the next step you want to take.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks so much for listing all of that. I'm going to be bidding tonight and am hoping to have everything booked then. Would you mind listing out a 3.5* strategy (that excludes CPS and MTE) with the rest of the criteria being the same, just in case the 4* doesn't work?

Thanks again, and I'll be sure to use the PRICELINE link.

Thanks, I just went through the strategy and no luck with 4*. Can we try a 3.5* strategy now?

These are the zones I'd like to use: Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MSG, MTW, TS

Quality - 3.5*

Price - max $150

Thanks for your help, and I'll be sure to use the PRICELINE link when bidding.

No luck with the 3.5* strategy either. Can we do a 3* strategy with the same criteria as the 3.5* strategy? Are there any further zones to be cautious about with this change in quality?

Thanks! I will use the PRICELINE link when bidding.

At the 3* level you only have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Thanks for the 3* strategy. Unfortunately, I still couldn't get a hotel. I know it's not an exact science and that there is a thread devoted to this, but do you have any thoughts on waiting until closer to my check-in date, particularly for NYC?

If waiting won't help matters, I would be willing to bid up to $175 starting with a 4* strategy. Would you mind listing such a strategy out for the following zones: CPS, Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MTE, MTW, and TS?

Thanks again for your help, and I'll be sure to use the PRICELINE link when bidding.

Hi,

I'm looking to book between 9/30 and 10/2 - should I follow a similar strategy?

Basically just looking to find the cheapest possible hotel that is still clean / bed bug free.

Which zones do you think I will have the best chance for landing a 3.5* in the $100-$150 range?

Are any zones better than others for being more likely to be near a subway station?

thereuare,

Do you have any advice on waiting until closer to my check-in date, particularly for NYC?

I would be willing to bid up to $175 given the fact that I have not been able to book a hotel. Could you provide a 4* strategy for zones CPS, Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MTE, MTW, and TS?

Thanks!

I wanted to let you know that I started using the same 4* strategy as before just with increasing each of my original bids by $25. I ended up getting the 4* Millenium Hilton for $145. Used the PRICELINE link. Thanks for your help everyone.

Nobody can say if rates will come down... or move higher... between now and your stay. I do think that rates are currently somewhat reasonable for this time of year and $175 has a chance at a 4*. Could rates drop $10-$20, sure, just as they could go up, but if you're asking if you'll see rates at $120, i don't think that is likely at all (although our strategy will try that anyway, should there be a pricing mistake or unexpected drop in prices). You can see additional comments on this topic in our PRICELINE FAQ.

Using your FIVE re-bid zones at the 4* level, i would bid as follows:

Select 4* Chelsea, Downtown, ESB, MTE, MTW...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Thanks for listing this all out. I actually bid right before you posted the strategy and was able to get the Millenium Hilton (all the details were described above).
