ntavares Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Hello - what a great website!I'm hoping to get some advice on hotels in NYC from Nov 30/11 to Dec 5/11. I've looked at the recent wins and noticed there are a lot of wins for $150 for Times Square. I've tried to bid at that price for my trip without success. What should I be going in with? I'm open to staying in the surrounding areas. I'm a first time tourist in NYC and would like to do touristy things while there, but of course want to pay the lowest price on my hotel! Please help :)
thereuare Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding!I'm hoping to get some advice on hotels in NYC from Nov 30/11 to Dec 5/11. I've looked at the recent wins and noticed there are a lot of wins for $150 for Times Square.Probably not for these dates, as your coming to NYC at one of the busiest weekends of the year, in one of the busiest times of the year.Based upon current rates at the moment, i'm guessing a 4* will likely run you close to $300/nite... 3.5* about $250... and a 3* about $200+.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. ntavares Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 Oh wow. What's going on that weekend that makes it so busy? I guess I'm not too fussed on the star level - not planning on spending much time in my room. I've been limiting my search to the areas around Times Square, but I've never been to NYC so I'm open to suggestions on where to stay. What area would be my best bet to get a good combination of low rate and still have easy access to the touristy places?
AaronJB Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 There may be other things going on (conventions and other events), but otherwise, this (last week of November but especially the first week of December) is the prime/peak period for holiday shopping/events before things calm down around mid-to-late December. Are you willing to go above $200, or would your budget max remain $150? Unfortunately, 3*+ will likely take $200+ in Midtown for these dates, and 2.5* will not likely be much less. It's not recommended to go below 2.5*, and even at the 2.5* level quality can definitely vary.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
ntavares Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 I'd like to stay in and around the $200 range, if possible. Obviously lower is better, but I do want to be able to get around while in the city. I'm also open to staying only 4 nights (Nov 30 - Dec 4) in Manhattan and the 5th night (Dec 4-Dec 5) closer to Newark since my flight is mid-day from there on December 5th.
thereuare Posted September 13, 2011 Report Posted September 13, 2011 The Sunday nite isn't the issue, as that is one of the slowest hotel nites of the week in this area (business travelers haven't yet arrived... many tourists have already gone home). Here are some of your options which involve some decisions on your part regarding price vs. convenience...1) As noted above, you can probably get a 3*hotel for around your $200 budget2) split your stay between NYC and Hoboken/Jersey City NJ. I think you can likely get a 4* hotel in this area for 12/2-12/5 for under $175/nite and it provides easy access to Manhattan via the PATH train... and then bid for a hotel for the first 2 nites of your stay in NYC, which will cost you closer to the rates mentioned above. The downside of staying in NJ is that you lose a lot of the 'vibe' of NYC, which is one of the things which makes it so special, but for the savings the trade-off may/may not be worth it to you, given it's your first time in the city.3) what i believe to be the W Hoboken is offered for your Sunday nite at $120/nite. You could purchase this for your last nite as Hoboken is a great big town/small city and would still give you things to do on Sunday nite (tons of bars and restaurants) and easy access to the airport on Monday morning. As well, the W has unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline which might be a nice way to conclude your trip (and MUCH better then the hotels near EWR Airport). You could then stay the other nites in the city (at substantially higher prices then this).Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. ntavares Posted September 13, 2011 Author Report Posted September 13, 2011 Thanks for all the info. I think I want to go with 4 nights downtown for the best price possible (even if it's above $200) and then do my last night as you suggest at the W Hoboken. Was that through Hotwire?
AaronJB Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 When searching for Jersey City for 2 adults for 12/4-5, I'm seeing a 4* Hoboken-Jersey City w/ Restaurant, Fitness, Hi-Speed Internet, Business, Tennis. This would be a possible match for the W.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
ntavares Posted September 14, 2011 Author Report Posted September 14, 2011 I just booked for 12/4 to 12/5 on Hotwire and got the W Hoboken for $123/night! I also bid $220 in Manhattan and got the Holiday Inn Midtown for the first 4 nights of my trip. Thanks so much for your help. Hoboken is a great suggestion for the night before I fly home. Thanks again!!
AaronJB Posted September 14, 2011 Report Posted September 14, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)Very nice deal for both properties during an extremely busy time period! It would be greatly appreciated if you could post the details (dates/amenities/zone/price) of your HOTWIRE win in a separate thread in the Hotwire New Jersey section of the board.
