Hi there,

I'm looking to get a good deal on a 4* in either Magnificent Mile or Grant Park area for Oct 14 to 17.

Any advice would be appreciated as I'm new to bidding on hotels through Priceline and Hotwire.

Cheers!

My guess is that for a 4* you're more likely looking at the $140-$160 range.

If you want to first try up to $120 you can begin as follows:

At the 4* level in Chicago you have SIX re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 4* NMA...

Bid $80, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $85, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $98, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $103, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 4* Loop...

Bid $80, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $85, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $90, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $95, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $98, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $103, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 4* NMA and Loop...

Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $108, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $113, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $118, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120

Excellent advice. I ran through all of the bids last night with no luck.

I was wondering if there is a rough rule of thumb when the hotel chains start lowering their pricing? Is it roughly 4 weeks or less to the target date?

This is discussed in greater detail in the FAQ under timing. There is no way to know if rates will go down closer to the dates; they can go both ways - sometimes people are successful with waiting, but others have only seen rates head higher.

You may be successful in waiting, but it is certainly a risk and this is a busy time of year in Chicago.

Thank you for keeping us updated and please let us know if you are successful/have any additional questions. Unfortunately, based on the prices I'm seeing today, I think a 4* win in either of the zones is still going to require a higher ($140-160 and possibly slightly higher than that) bid.

Sorry to hear that your bids weren't accepted. Thank you for keeping us updated and please let us know if you have any questions. Unfortunately, these dates still appear busy/expensive, with HOTWIRE showing options in the three downtown zones (Mag Mile/Streeterville, NMA-Water Tower-GC, Loop) for $194 and up.

Tried again yesterday. Started with the usual 80 to 103 on NMA and the loop as per above. The last round I did $10 increments leading up to $160 and no luck.

Thinking I may need a new strategy for these two areas with 3.5 star.

For a 3.5* I think you may still need to go as high, or higher, then you've already bid for a 4* property.

At the 3.5* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select 3.5* NMA...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3.5* Loop...

Bid $100, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $110, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $120, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINE

Select 3.5* NMA and Loop...

Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $150, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $155, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $160

You didn't mention a maximum bid so went has high as your previous round of bidding, but of course you're welcome to stop at whatever value you're comfortable with (although i did go this high based upon current rates i'm seeing for your dates). Any questions feel free to ask.
