AnnieMatt Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 My friend and I are bringing out daughters (4 of us in total) for our first trip to New York City October 5 - 10.We are wanting a hotel in either TS, MTW, or MTE. I'm a small town girl and while we are so excited to go there it is a very overwhelming task finding a place to stay!We are hoping to get a 3* or higher, safe and withing walking distance to times square, Radio City Music Hall and a subway, for $200 per night. When we booked I didn't realize that this was a popular time to visit the city. Thanks!
AaronJB Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Unfortunately, September through mid-December in NYC is often quite busy/expensive.The difficulty/risk with PRICELINE is that it only guarantees 1 bed/double occupancy and that's a particular risk in NYC, where rooms are small - it's not unheard of for even some high-end rooms to be as little as 130-175 sq ft. Rooms with two beds also often go for a premium.HOTWIRE would be a better choice in this case, as if you indicate 2 adults/2 children, you are guaranteed bedding (commonly 2 beds, but could be 1 + sofabed or other combo) for the entire party. Are you willing to risk possibly getting one bed? Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
AnnieMatt Posted September 6, 2011 Author Report Posted September 6, 2011 I think one bed would be a chance we would take (seeing the prices), our girls are 8 and 11 so they could sleep on the floor (we'd bring sleeping bags)!!Would we be better trying Priceline to get a better rate (close to $200 per night)?
thereuare Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 I think one bed would be a chance we would take...Consider yourself forewarned... there is a very high risk or receiving a room with only one bed. With this noted, if you decide you want to move forward with PRICELINE, when bidding 3.5* and under the MTE zone has some hotels which can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subway, is this acceptable? Also, the first 2 nites of your stay are more expensive then the last 3 nites, so you may want to consider SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID as you may be able to get a better deal for the weekend nites vs. the midweek nites, but would then need to likely change hotels midstay.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. AnnieMatt Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 We have decided that it might be better to ensure 2 beds, so we'd be better sticking with Hotwire. Our plans include Radio City Music Hall and a broadway show so I think being closer to Times Square is more important that a bit of a walk to a subway. We are planning a visit to the Brooklyn Tabernacle so we'd need a subway for that. So I think Midtown East would be okay....would it??"I do appreciate all this help, I'm a tad clueless when it come to all of this.Do you think prices on Hotwire will go down closer to the date that we want to leave?Thank you!!!
AaronJB Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 The Beekman Tower is $263 per night regular rate via Orbitz, plus coupon code ORBITZ5 takes 5% off = $249.90. While unfortunately more than you were hoping to spend, this is a 1BR suite with 1 queen and 1 sofabed. This property is in MTE and rather far E in MTE, so it isn't quite as centrally/optimally located, but it is the cheapest regular rate hotel property on Orbitz, and it would provide a larger room than most NYC properties.Additionally, as noted above, you may see some overall price improvement by splitting your stay, although that would also likely require a move.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE, PRICELINE or Orbitz links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Please start by reading your messages. Our plans include Radio City Music Hall and a broadway show so I think being closer to Times Square is more important that a bit of a walk to a subway... So I think Midtown East would be okay....would it??"MTW and TS would likely be your best bets to get you centrally located... but the issue is going to be your budget, which just doesn't appear to be enough for this busy time of year in the city, especially for quad occupancy which often increases the price (vs. double occupancy) since at many hotels it can be considered an upgrade.Do you think prices on Hotwire will go down closer to the date that we want to leave?Nobody can say if rates will come down... or move even higher.
