Natedawg71 Posted September 6, 2011 Report Posted September 6, 2011 Good Afternoon! My husband and I are making our first trip to NYC in October. I'm looking to stay somewhere nice and I'm wondering what my strategy should be for bidding. I've read up on rebidding. I'm looking at MTW, MTW, TS & CPS. We'll be doing typical sightseeing/touristy stuff and I've read these areas are good for first time visits. If someone has an alternate zone that would work, I'd love to hear. I'd really like to stay under $250 but can go up to $300 if I can get the 4* in our area. I know it's the most expensive time of year. I seem to recall a winning bid for the 15 at a 4star in MTE. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Natedawg71 Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 So, I guess I'm not clear on how to determine if there are any 4* hotels in the area by using the above search. Can you please help? I know there's a list on this site but I also read the disclaimers that they can change at any time. Thanks!
thereuare Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 Start with the following...1) Use the PRICELINE search box on the upper right of this page, enter New York and your dates, and click "GO".2) List each zone that is offered in this region. 3) Next to each zone list the highest star rating offered in the zone. The way to determine the highest star rating offered in the zone is by selecting the first zone i the list, then scrolling down to see the highest star rating selectable (ie- not greyed out). NEXT UNcheck the selected zone, place a checkmark in the next zone, and repeat the process for each zone in the region. Each time you take note of the highest star rating in the zone, make sure that only ONE zone is selected above.4) post your findings and we'll take it from thereIf you don't follow the above just post back and we'll break it down further. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Natedawg71 Posted September 7, 2011 Author Report Posted September 7, 2011 Awesome! I got it! I'll try to bid tonight and see what I come up with. I think I went up to 260 last night and didn't get anything! I'm tempted to do the HotWire 4* at 280 something and be done with it! Do you think I can really do better that that?
AaronJB Posted September 7, 2011 Report Posted September 7, 2011 It's worth trying to see if you can get a rate lower than what HOTWIRE is offering. In terms of the HOTWIRE listing, what zone is it in, and what amenities are showing with the listing?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
Natedawg71 Posted September 8, 2011 Author Report Posted September 8, 2011 4* MTE is $284 with the following. I'm thinking Grand Hyatt or Intercontinental because of the tennis. Is that right? This Hotel features the following amenities:Fitness CenterGuests have access to exercise equipment; an additional charge may apply.Restaurant(s)Property offers at least one restaurant on the premises; hours and days of operation may vary.Business CenterGuests have access to business equipment and services; an additional charge may apply.High-Speed Internet AccessGuestrooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access; an extra charge may apply.Tennis NearbyProperty is located within walking distance or a short drive of at least one tennis court; an extra charge typically applies. Would this in 4* TS be Westin or W Hotel?4-star Hotel in Times Square - Theatre DistrictThis Hotel features the following amenities:Smoke Free RoomsGuest rooms at this hotel are always smoke-free.Fitness CenterGuests have access to exercise equipment; an additional charge may apply.Restaurant(s)Property offers at least one restaurant on the premises; hours and days of operation may vary.Business CenterGuests have access to business equipment and services; an additional charge may apply.High-Speed Internet AccessGuestrooms are equipped with high-speed Internet access; an extra charge may apply.Spa ServicesGuests have access to a spa facility or spa services; an extra charge typically applies.I think I'll try again tomorrow as I was playing around before I got the strategy so I blocked myself for the day. Hopefully something takes tomorrow!!
thereuare Posted September 8, 2011 Report Posted September 8, 2011 Best guess for the MTE property is either the Grand Hyatt or the InterContinental Barclay... my best guess for the Times Square property is the Westin; i wouldn't exclude the W Times Square from the possibilities, but if it ends up being this property, it would be the first time this property was seen with a Smoke Free icon (although it is a Smoke Free property)Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know how it goes or if we can be of further help. Natedawg71 Posted September 9, 2011 Author Report Posted September 9, 2011 Thanks for the help! I ended up getting the Intercontinental Barclay for $265 a night. Thats a little bit of a savings from the hotwire price. I'm second guessing midtown east now. Do you think we'll be happy there instead of Times Square? Everyone I've talked to says Times Square but from everything I've read, it's a nice place to visit but not the best place to stay. I think I would have second guessed either way. Thanks again for the help! I appreciate it!
AaronJB Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)Very nice deal for the Inter-Continental. Just to confirm, did you get it via PRICELINE or HOTWIRE?I'd much prefer staying in MTE over TS; very nice area and less busy/hectic, yet still convenient.Thank you for sharing your win and please use the site's PRICELINE or HOTWIRE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
thereuare Posted September 9, 2011 Report Posted September 9, 2011 You'll be perfectly fine with this location, imo... when you want to go to Times Square it's just a short walk away. You'll be surprised at just how compact NYC is and for anything isn't a short walk away, it is just a short subway ride away. You're also near my often recommended Ess-A-Bagel (Third Ave at 51st St) which has one of the best bagels in the city, makes for a nice, and relatively inexpensive, breakfast among local NYers.Have a great trip.
