Priceline Hotel: 5* Venetian Bidding Help

Hi,

I am hoping to stay at the venetian for 2 nights (midweek) July 22 - July 24. I have seen many people get the venetian for $79 (midweek) Do you think it will be possible for me to get the same rate for my dates?

The 5* on hotwire is showing $249/night for my dates. So is the venetain website.

I wonder why these midweek rates are so high?

BTW, I have a backup reservation at the Luxor for $59/ngt. I was really hoping to get the venetian at $79/ngt like so many others? Do you think it is possible if I wait until next week?

THx

It looks like the 23rd will be the problem date.

Although a special $119 rate is no longer available on the 22nd, it once was, but was never available for the 23rd (this basically means for one reason or another that occupancy was expected to be higher than usual for the 23rd, and is probably a little stronger than anticipated for the 22nd).

More evidence of the 23rd being the problem is that if you search Hotwire for just the nite of the 22nd, you'll see a rate of $175, just the 23rd shows $290, and both nites shows $275 (no need to open the can of worms of the ludicrousness this represents)

The $79 rate is usually only available within about 1 week of check-in, other times, if available, it usually goes for the low $90's. You can try it, but given the rates we're seeing, i'm doubtful that you'd be successful. You may be successful for just the 22nd, but i don't think it's worth chaning hotels mid-stay (just my opinion).

Lastly, have you been to Vegas before? Luxor is near the southern most part of the strip and wouldn't be my first choice to stay if i was really going to be doing a lot of touristy things on the strip. The rate you received is good, but i'd bet you could get something comprable and be more centrally located. If you're content with the Luxor that's fine too, but if you'd like some other suggestions, post what's important to you for this trip (pool area, tourist attractions, etc) and i'll try to give some alternative suggestions within the same general price range.

Thanks for such an informative response.

I guess i'll wait till next week before i place my bids.

About Luxor, i was having the same concerns. That is why I also have a backup reservation with Paris for $79/night.

After reading your response I think I will opt for the Paris if I'm not able to get the Venetian at my target price.

Also i woud really appreciate if you could share some more info about some low rates I can expect to find or is $79 at Paris and $59 at Luxor already the best I can do for those nights.

Thanks again

I think $79/nite for Paris is an excellent rate... ask for a "P" suite (on a high floor?) at check-in which i believe are corner rooms and a little larger (showing the willingness to tip $20 will help the cause somewhat, but up to you if it's worth the extra $20).

Other rates i found for your dates were $79 at Aladdin, $59 at Harrah's and $57 at Flamingo.

Harrah's and Flamingo are lesser properties than Paris and Aladdin, but i add them only because they're the same price point as the Luxor and i don't know how much cost is a factor.

I've heard good reviews of both the Aladdin and Paris (and Paris rates are typically a little higher than the rates at the Aladdin). These two hotels have somewhat different personalities, and i'd choose whichever seems to suit your own personality best.

Yes, the check-in person.

Will they get offended, absolutely not (think about their hourly wage and how $20 will add $2.50 per hour to their 8 hour shift). This is quite common in Vegas, and based upon some random comments from users here, apprarently is getting more common. One poster here went into some detail of how it's done near the end of THIS POST.

The real 'trick' is doing it in a way that let's the clerk now that there's a $20 in it for him/her, but not give up the cash until you know you've gotten the room. Some just hand over $20 folded up behind their credit card, but <personally> i think this is a way to lose $20, as you don't want to give up the money until you know you've been upgraded... sometimes the hotel is full and they simply can't accomodate an upgrade. Late at nite check-in is also tougher since most rooms have already been assigned.

Here's some links from other websites that discuss this:

$20 Trick

Another $20 Discussion

If your hotel offers airport check-in, it's often suggested to use it as the line is almost always shorter, and if trying the $20 trick there is less management watching over their shoulder.

If you try it, let us know how it worked out.

And you though we only knew about Priceline and Hotwire :)

I just thought of something that I would like to share with you and get your advice.

I have pasted the rates for venetian from hotwire as well as from aanhotels.com.

Hotwire has the rooms for $272/night (Total including tax + fees = $596.95)

AAnhotels.com has the same for $169/night (Total including tax = $368.42)

I was thinking of buying the room from hotwire and then claiming double the difference.

I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do ? I mean is there a risk involved? What if i dont get my

money back?

Also is the Double the difference apply to the total cost including taxes and fees or just the room cost.

In other words in my case will I be eligible for

2x($596.95 - $368.42) = $457.06 ( this way my effective cost for venetian would be $139.89 (all inclusive)

OR

2x($272 - $169) x2 (days) = $412 ( this way my effective cost for venetian would be $184.95 (all inclusive)

Please advice if this is the right thing to do and what amount of refund would i be eligible for?

From Hotwire:

No. of Rooms: 1

No. of Nights: 2

Price Per Night: $272.00

Subtotal: $544.00

Taxes/Fees: $52.95

Total Cost: $596.95

From AAnhotels.com ($169/night)

City: Las Vegas - Arrival Date: July 22, 2003

Hotel: VENETIAN HOTEL & CASINO - No. of nights: 2

Date of Quote: July 11, 2003 - No. of rooms: 1

Room Information Room Rate Additional Adults Total

It is my understanding the difference is based upon room rate only, so your second example is the correct one (refund does not apply to Hotwire's fee or taxes).

As for risk involved, you're at the mercy of Hotwire. Here are some posts that may help:

I guess I chickened out. The risk was too much for little reward. Others might disagree, but thats just me.I'm still waiting for the venetian prices to fall down, they are still very high $249/night for my days (now less than 8 days left). Will update the board once I book the rooms either through priceline or hotwire. As of now i still have my backups at Luxor and Paris (Need to cancel them in 4 more days)

Just an update on the rates on venetian.com (exactly 7 days left for my travel dates)

July 22 - $259

July 23 - $699 :)

I dont think the July 23 rate would fall to the $120 - $200 range as seen before to get a reasonable deal on priceline. have no idea as to why July 23(Wed) is that expensive . I also checked for the conventions and I couldnt find anything that could force the rates that high.

Has anyone seen the rates fall so much before?

There could be a small (1 day) convention with the Venetian being the host hotel, a wedding party coming in for one day, etc; all of which could account for the unusually mid-week high demand. Vegas is a market like no other.

When comparing the prices for your options, i think the Paris is the best bet of them all.

BTW, i'm looking for 2 tix for the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game if you know anybody that only bought season tix for the UM vs OSU game and needs to sell the other tickets. :)
