telezk Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 I am somewhat a novice at Priceline. I have used it and this forum to find a few great deals. But I have never attempted NYC. Wow, so many choices it makes things a bit more confusing. I need a room in TS as we will be meeting up with friends who are staying at The Manhatten. I really have no clue what to bid and where to start- can anyone help? Thanks!
AaronJB Posted August 25, 2011 Report Posted August 25, 2011 Good afternoon. Please provide your desired budget/star rating per night, and we would be happy to offer suggestions on how to proceed. Additionally, are you only looking for TS, or would you be willing to be look into one of the other, nearby midtown zones (MTW, MTE; there is a map showing the zone boundaries during the bidding process) in order to try to increase odds and possibly get something a bit cheaper (as TS is traditionally the most expensive zone)?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
telezk Posted August 25, 2011 Author Report Posted August 25, 2011 Sorry- looking for 3* or better and willing to pay $200 per night with fees included - is that possible? No, I want something in TS - its my wife and 13 year old daughter and they have never been to NYC- their friends are staying at The Manhatten so we want something as close as possible. Thanks for your help!
thereuare Posted August 26, 2011 Report Posted August 26, 2011 I am somewhat a novice at Priceline. I have used it and this forum to find a few great deals. We're glad to hear the board has been helpful to you in the past, but it's disappointing that this is your first post. Please begin to share your wins with the board so that the information can help others, just as you have been helped by those who posted before you.I need a room in TS as we will be meeting up with friends who are staying at The Manhatten. The Manhattan is actually in the MTW zone, would this zone be acceptable as well?...its my wife and 13 year old daughter and they have never been to NYC...To confirm, it's just the two of them... you don't need triple occupancy, correct?I think $200 all-in may be difficult for these dates, but confirm if MTW is also acceptable and we'll take a closer look at rates for these dates. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. telezk Posted August 26, 2011 Author Report Posted August 26, 2011 Actually i have posted previously and i always use the links. I wouldnt be opposed to mtw. Correct, it is just the two of them. Thanks!
telezk Posted August 26, 2011 Author Report Posted August 26, 2011 Actually, I just noticed that there is a "Manhatten Centre Hotel" in MTW but "The Manhatten at Times Square" is the hotel I am trying to stay close to- so I would not want to try MTW, only TS - Sorry about that and thanks for any help!
thereuare Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Your $200 all-in amounts to a $160 bid price and unfortunately that is not likely going to be enough for a 3* hotel in this zone.If you want to give it a shot, at the 3* level you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.Select 3* Times Square...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $160Any questions feel free to ask.Post back and we'll weigh your other options. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. telezk Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Thanks! In your opinion what would it take to land a 4 star? A 3.5? A 3?
thereuare Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 Based upon current rates, at the moment i'm guessing at any of those star levels it may take $220-$250 before taxes and fees.Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. telezk Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Thanks - can you give me some guidance on bidding for a 4* or 3.5* with a max bid of $190 in Times Square. I appreciate your help!
thereuare Posted August 27, 2011 Report Posted August 27, 2011 At the 4* level in NYC you have FIVE re-bid zones, at the 3.5* level you have FOUR re-bid zone. telezk Posted August 27, 2011 Author Report Posted August 27, 2011 Thanks- I used the PRICELINE link and did as you recommended and did not have any luck- I may try it a couple more days before uping my top bid- when I do, I will post my results. Thanks for help! Of course, when I do try it again, I will use the PRICELINE link from this site! :)

telezk Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 FYI- I used the PRICELINE link and followed your advice with no luck. I have tried it the past 3 days and raised my starting point each day by $5 ending up with a max bid of $205 which is really pushing my budget. I think I am going to try to get a 4* in the Jersey City / Hoboken area. We (actually my wife and daughter) plan to be in Times Square daily during the trip but will also be in Hoboken for an event. I hear that it is very close, relatively safe and much cheaper- sounds good to me. I will move my post over to NJ Priceline forum. Thanks! :)
telezk Posted August 29, 2011 Author Report Posted August 29, 2011 I was looking for a 4* in the Times Square area and hoping to bid no more than $210 - I have tried for 3 days now with no luck and it sounds like I will probably need to bid closer to $250 to get close. So now I am looking at Jersey City / Hoboken as this seems to be an area relatively close to Times Square and convenient to other planned activities. I have never been to NYC or Hoboken- would there be any concern staying in this area when our plans will have us in Times Square each day?Can you provide any insight as to how to bid and how much to bid on a room in this area? I have noticed that today and over the past few weeks bids of $100 to $130 have won reservations at the Westin Jersey City Newport, on other dates. Also, how does bidding on multiple rooms effect results? We may need 2 or possibly 3 rooms. Of the 4* hotels in the Jersey City area, should I be concerned if I will need a room with 2 beds? Thanks for your help! :)
thereuare Posted August 30, 2011 Report Posted August 30, 2011 Please keep all posts for this stay in this thread, if you ultimately stay in NJ we'll then move the thread to that section of the board. All PRICELINE reservations are for double occupancy, after that it's at the discretion of the hotel, and you could receive a room with only one bed. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request. Is this a risk you're willing to accept? If not, HOTWIRE may still be an option as they allow you to search for up to quad occupancy and ensure sleeping accommodations for everyone you include in your search (although this usually means two beds, the second 'bed' could be a sofabed, rollaway, etc)Generally speaking the Hyatt and Westin have been pretty good about honoring room requests when available, at the W Hoboken their standard room is with one bed and there may be an additional charge to 'upgrade' to a room with two beds (if such a room is available)Let us know if you thin PRICELINE or HOTWIRE is the better option for you for this stay, as well as your maximum budget per nite for staying on the NJ side, and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. telezk Posted September 1, 2011 Author Report Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks for the input- we changed up our plans a little and added more people to our trip. So we were looking for 3 rooms 4* hopefully at the Westin Jersey City with its close proximity to the PATH. I used the link on this forum to HOTWIRE and we got a price of $156 for 9/16 - 9-19 for one room; if we increased the room number to 2 or 3 the rate per night moved to $229. I verified with HOTWIRE that if we chose 3 rooms we would guarantee to have all three in the same hotel. So we decided to bid on one room at a time to take advantage of the lower rate. Also, as noted by another post on this board, we tried something else. Instead of searching through Jersey City, NJ or Hoboken, NJ we searched under New York City and checked the box at the bottom left hand side for Hoboken/Jersey City- we received a room quote with the same characteristics but with a rate that was $5 per night cheaper -$151! Anyway, it was the Jersey City Westin. Great- so the next person in our group attempted to get a like room and none were available- the price was now $229 with characteristics of the Hyatt Regency on the Hudson just down the street from the Westin. While this looks to be a very nice hotel, we preferred to be all together. I then realized that it was the 3rd night of our stay that was the problem- if I requested rooms for the first two nights, I received the same rate as before. But it seems that currently there are no discounted rooms on HOTWIRE for our sunday night. I just booked two additional rooms at $151 for friday 9/16 and saturday 9/17 and will attempt to pickup sunday night as our trip gets closer. It looks like currently for sunday night a 4* room is available but probably at the Hyatt Regency or the W - jersey city. The amenities are fitness, rest, bus cent & high speed with 95% recommendation. Anyone have a clue what hotel that would be?
thereuare Posted September 1, 2011 Report Posted September 1, 2011 Congratulations on your (partial) success! We'll use this thread to reflect your current purchase of the Westin. Can you please add a reply to this thread with the amenities shown before your purchase... you can still view this information by going to HOTWIRE and clicking the MY ACCOUNT link near the top right of their home page. Then, please start a NEW TOPIC for the remaining nite(s) of your stay along with the amenities showing for the current property offered.Thank you for sharing your results and using the HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your purchase.Enjoy your stay. telezk Posted September 1, 2011 Author Report Posted September 1, 2011 Thanks- Sorry the amenities for the Jersey City 4* hotel were: Smoke Free, Fitness Center, Pool, Restaurants, Business Center and High Speed Internet Access- Thanks again for the help and as always I used the HOTWIRE link here on the forum.
