newyorker76 Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Hi, I'm very new to priceline and how to go about bidding etc. Total newbie so any help is greatly appreciated. Arriving in New york on 5th Oct to 20th Oct. Travelling with wife, looking for 3.5 - 4 star in Manhatten. Happy to go with suggested areas, but dont want to be too far out, and would like to be close to subway. Budget is between $150-$200 US a night. Would consider dropping to 3 star if nothing available. Thanks.
newyorker76 Posted August 19, 2011 Author Report Posted August 19, 2011 Starting to think I should reduce the days to maybe 3-4 and see if I have any success. Also, is it better to wait till only 1 week to go as better chance? I see people are winning the Intercontinental Barclay for around $220 a night - but that doesnt look like much savings when other sites like Expedia are advertising for around $240....
thereuare Posted August 19, 2011 Report Posted August 19, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding!Starting to think I should reduce the days to maybe 3-4 and see if I have any success.Have you done any bidding yet? Are you willing to change hotels 4-5 times over the course of this trip? Also, is it better to wait till only 1 week to go as better chance?Given the number of nites you need i wouldn't cut it that close, but for additional information on this subject see the related 'Bid Early or Close to Check-in' link in our PRICELINE FAQ.I see people are winning the Intercontinental Barclay for around $220 a night - but that doesnt look like much savings when other sites like Expedia are advertising for around $240....Rates are date specific... are you seeing the $240 rate for your own dates, a general 'rates starting at...', or specifically for the dates when others have won on PRICELINE at $220? I checked rates of two wins when users have reported winning ~$220 and hotel direct rates for this nites were nearly $300/nite.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Let us know the information above and we'll take it from there. newyorker76 Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 hi, I have started bidding, but no luck as yet. Have bid up to $185 for 4 star. I have bid up to $170 for 3.5 star. Would prefer not to change hotels 5 times, but willing to change about 3 times if we have to. Should I seperate dates into 3 lots and start bidding from there? My maximum bid for a 4 star would be $220 a night. My maximum bid for a 3.5 star would be $170 a nightWilling to drop to 3 star as last resort for $150 a nightThanks for your help :)
thereuare Posted August 22, 2011 Report Posted August 22, 2011 Is it worth it to you to try bidding up to your limit first in hopes of not having to change hotels... or do you prefer to SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID in hopes of a lower price? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases... please click this PRICELINE link before replying.Thanks. newyorker76 Posted August 22, 2011 Author Report Posted August 22, 2011 Yes, I have tried bidding to my upper limit for the entire stay. Splitting the dates seems like the only way to go.
thereuare Posted August 23, 2011 Report Posted August 23, 2011 Rates are fairly high, and fairly consistent, throughout this stay (there is some fluctuation from day-to-day but no MAJOR changes at most of hotels looked at) and i think you're going to need to raise your budget within each star rating to be successful, even if splitting dates.Which zone(s) did you bid already? I assume you bid up to your limit for all three star ratings above?Would, for example, the the small rooms at the Hudson Hotel be acceptable? What about a hotel that was a 15 minute walk to the subway? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
