Priceline Hotel: First time NY visit 3.5* or 4* recommendation 10/14/11

I have a work conference in Newark that ends at 3pm on Friday 10/14 and I'm headed to New York for 24 hours before heading back to Newark to return to Seattle. Looking for the lowest priced/nicest 3.5* or 4* hotel in New York on 10/14 that will put me in good position to maximize my 24 hrs of sightseeing. Anyone have any suggestions? I don't know anything about the different areas.
