Kim39 Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 This is my first trip to New York - is this a pricey time to go? What kind of rates can I expect?I'm having trouble getting a successful bid. I've used the 5 areas with MTE, MTW, and Downtown. I started at $150 and stopped at $260. I just started over and have included bidding with ESB. I used the PRICELINE links from the website. Thank you in advance!

Kim39 Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 Hi, I have clicked on the PRICELINE link and continued in my bidding. This is my first time in NY and I was expecting higher prices but wow, I was unprepared to be rejected at $260. I only need these two nights as I'll be staying with a friend before that. I did notice that Friday (11/11) is Veteran's Day - could that have an impact on rates?Again, thank you for your response!
thereuare Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 If budget is an issue (or you just don't feel like paying $250+ for a hotel room) i would consider adding other nearby zones. Most midtown locations are centrally located and the zones are adjacent to one another, so for the most part, you should be able to make any midtown location work for your needs. If you're currently bidding Midtown and Downtown, then just about anything south of Central Park would likely be equivalent to winning in one of these zones. If you only want to bid the previous zones, i suspect you're not far off... HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the MTE zone for $290/nite (i'm guessing the InterContinental Barclay or Grand Hyatt) and you can probably shave a few dollars from this price by bidding on PRICELINE.Alternatively, if you don't need a 4* hotel, you can probably get something at the 3*/3.5* rating at levels then you have already bid. HOTWIRE has 3.5* properties in the low $200's, and while these may ultimately be 3* properties on PRICELINE, HOTWIRE gives the benefit of being able to see HOTWIRE recommendation ratings and/or Tripadvisor review ratings... so you may want to consider a 'good' 3*/3.5* at $225 vs. bidding $280+ for a 4* hotel. As well, you could wait and hope for lower prices, but while you wait it's also possible that prices go even higher.Let us know your thoughts on the above and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Kim39 Posted July 28, 2011 Author Report Posted July 28, 2011 So I got The Strand for $250 per night. Is this a good rate for this hotel?
thereuare Posted July 29, 2011 Report Posted July 29, 2011 Congratulations on your success! We don't see this hotel come up very often, but it gets very good reviews... this is about $100 savings off a traditionally booked room so while not cheap in dollar terms, it would appear to be a very nice deal for this property.Thank you for sharing your win with the board. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Enjoy your stay.
