kingengland Posted July 25, 2011 Author Report Posted July 25, 2011 Thanks for the quick reply.I'd like to keep my hotel expenses for the 4 night stay under $1000 and closer to $800 if possible. Also I'd like to keep it to 4 star hotels only.Since we'll be doing a lot of touristy things (Empire St. Building/Ellis Island/Time Sq.) I think the following zones would work best, but please feel free to add any that you think would work:MTEMTWTSCPSAgain, any help would be appreciated. I bought my airline tickets today and would like to wrap up the hotel within the next few days.
neteffectr Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 In case it is helpful to know, I submitted bids step by step today all the way up to $186 per night for 9/3 to 9/5 at both the 3.5 and 4-star level in all of the following zones -- and all bids failed. I was offered the chance to try again if I would raise my bid to $219 per night plus Priceline taxes and fees ($537 total for the 2 nights, which really isn't bad), but after quite a bit of research, I declined that -- and for $587 total including taxesl, booked a room with 2 double beds at the Affinia Manhattan, an older but newly renovated 3.5-star property that's 1 block from Penn Station and 4 blocks from the Empire State Building. I have used Priceline numerous times and scored wonderful bargains at very nice hotels, but ultimately, being sure of bedding configuration was more important for me on this trip than the Priceline savings. Perhaps you'll find a better deal as your travel dates draw closer, but don't bet on it, since the first week in September includes not only the Labor Day weekend but the US Open being played in Queens.MTEMTWTSCPSESB MSGChelseaHell's Kitchen (which has 1 4-star property)
thereuare Posted July 26, 2011 Report Posted July 26, 2011 Sorry to hear the bidding didn't work out for you this time... i'm sure the US Open has much more to do with higher prices then does the Labor Day Weekend (as holidays are often a bit slower in the city due to fewer business travelers)Thank you for closing this thread with your decision. kingengland Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 I think the replies got mixed up since I haven't stopped bidding.neteffectr - Thanks for your info.thereuare - I was offered a room for my desired dates yesterday for $189. Do you think I should try to get this deal again or start the bidding process. I'd still like to try to get the room for under $189, so please let me know your bidding strategy.Much thanks.
kingengland Posted July 26, 2011 Author Report Posted July 26, 2011 Just used a strategy I saw on another thread and got the W Hotel in Midtown East for $170/night for 4 nights.I think it's a pretty good deal, so thanks for the tips.

cassienova Posted July 27, 2011 Report Posted July 27, 2011 just wondering what strategy you used, since i am in basically hte same boat (am going to nyc 9/28 - 10/5). thanks!
neteffectr Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 just wondering what strategy you used, since i am in basically hte same boat (am going to nyc 9/28 - 10/5). thanks!Actually, I was wondering as well, since in the 48 hours before the original poster announced his win, not only me but 3 different friends ALL placed bids higher than his (between $186 and $200 in every case) for a 3.5 to 4-star hotel in MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB and in some cases, additional zones, for 9/3 to 9/5. Every single one of us bid ALL of those zones step by step and adding rebid zones using the strategy outlined here, and then we all did it again during wee hours to late hours of the same morning before he reported his win -- and we were all denied in every case. Something seems odd......Also, note that he says he was offered a room at $189. Priceline "Name Your Own Price" does not work like that. It's certainly possibly to get a one-time offer stating that "if you are willing to raise your bid to $189, you can try your bid again right now" (within the same parameters) -- but you will never get an outright advance confirmation of a room available at a given rate from "Name Your Own Price".
thereuare Posted July 28, 2011 Report Posted July 28, 2011 cassienova,Rates are date specific, so the OP's acceptance vs. your rejection does not have to do with the manner or strategy which they used, but that rates for their dates are different (and less) then rates for your own dates. If you check hotel direct rates for the hotel won in this thread for the dates posted, you'll see that they're just under $300/nite... whereas rates at this same property for your own stay is at $468/nite. neteffectr,I'm sure the OP was paraphrasing the counter-offer they received. If you'd like help with your own stay please start a NEW TOPIC, and include the date(s) of your stay. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Thanks.
