Hello Everyone, I will be traveling with my daughter and her friend (18 and 17) to New York September 12-17. I am needing some help as to where we should stay. I have gone to New York a couple times before and always stayed at the Embassy Suites in Tribeca but it is being renovated into a Conrad hotel (sounds expensive). In our travels around the city it seemed areas were so hit and miss that I can't remember the areas and if they were good or bad. We are for sure on a budget and want to stay in a nice area. I want to try to get a room under 175 a night...not sure if that is even possible. I have seriously scoured this great forum to get tips and ideas on how to bid and hope I've truly learned a thing or two. Any ideas anyone???? Thanks so much. Also, I am looking for a 4* to 3 1/2*

Welcome to Betterbidding. :)

September is generally an expensive/very expensive time of year in NYC. Additionally, PRICELINE only guarantees one bed/double occupancy and using it for more than 2 people in NYC definitely runs the risk of only one bed. HOTWIRE is a better choice, as one can indicate how many people in the party. What would be your desired star rating?

Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

Thanks for the reply :) The bad part is I purchased my airline tickets before looking for rooms. I am looking for a 4* to 3 1/2 *. I have only stayed in Tribeca on my previous trips and feel quite comfortable in that particular area but it seems very expensive. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm assuming you need one room for the three of you?

Not only is this an expensive time in NYC, but searching for triple occupancy in NYC makes this is a bit more difficult as many rooms in NYC aren't designed for more than double occupancy (and are therefore considered an upgrade)

If you search HOTWIRE for 2adults/1child (fortunately the 17 year old is sill considered a child by HOTWIRE's definition) you'll see that just about everything is outside of your expected budget.

Is staying in NJ with an easy commute to manhattan an option? There are 4* hotels in Hoboken-Jersey City within your budget and provides easy access to Manhattan via PATH train. If not, is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option... you could stay in Jersey City for 2-3 nites to save some money, then change hotels to Manhattan, applying some of the savings to a more expensive hotel there.

Your thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. All I would need is two double beds. Do you think if I raised my price to 250 max, it would help. How long does it take from NJ to NY???

May sound like a simple request to you... but perhaps not to a hotel which has a high percentage of rooms with only one bed OR where rooms with 2 beds are considered an upgrade (and your booked for a 'standard')

In terms of bidding... no it won't help increase your chances of a room with 2 beds since your reservation will still be for a 'standard' room. In terms of HOTWIRE, if you search for 2adults/1child, does anything appear within your new budget?

15 minutes. You do lose some of the 'vibe' and 'rush' of the city, so if your daughter and her friend have never been to the city, or if they're typical teenagers, they will probably enjoy the city much more... which is why splitting between two hotels could strike a good balance between convenience and cost.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

I definitely want them to experience the city. I did notice this morning when I went on HOTWIRE that if I searched for the first three days it came up with a Downtown/Soho 3* hotel with 90% hotwire, internet, restaurant, and business center - for $161 Do you have any idea what hotel that might be?? Also, I tried putting in for the last two nights separately and this description did not come up anywhere.

How would I go about splitting my stay????

I'm not seeing the $161 Downtown property when searching for triple occupancy.. only for double occupancy. Are you still seeing this when searching HOTWIRE for 3 people (or perhaps your earlier search was only for double occupancy??)
