first time bidder on Priceline, have used hotwire successfully however want to try and get a deal on a 4* in Chelsea for a week in October.

we are 4 adults, wanting to stay in a 4* NYC (Chelsea) - 10/5/11 to 10/12/11 (2 rooms) for $200 per room

we can stretch to $250-ish (incl all taxes etc) if we have to.. or drop down to 3.5* to get a better deal.

my friends really want to stay in Chelsea, what's our chances?

thanks in advance

Welcome to BetterBidding!

This may be tough on account of all of the following:

-the only 4* hotel reported to the board thus far has since changed hands and the property has not yet been reported as a win under the new owners

-an expensive time of year

-no 3.5* hotels reported to the board in this zone either

If you want to start by trying for a 4* you can bid as follows:

At the 4* level you have FIVE re-bid zones. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

(NOTE: 're-bid zone1' is not the same as priceline's Zone1, 're-bid zone2' is not the same as priceline's Zone2, etc, etc)

Select 4* Chelsea...

Bid $130, if rejected add re-bid zone1...

Bid $140, if rejected add re-bid zone2...

There are certainly other midtown zones to try before resorting to Downtown (if that's not where you want to be), but since you prefer Chelsea, why not start with the above and we'll take it from there.

update on the days bidding for a 4* in Chelsea, and surrounds

bid up to $235 in the following areas (just under usd4000 for the week)

CPS, Chelsea, ESB, HK, MSG, MTE, MTW, TS

didn't end up with a room... will wait 24 hrs and start again. Tomorrow I'll got to USD250

I can get a 4* room via hotwire for about USD294 in Chelsea, think its the hotel indigo as has business, and internet.... USD4848 for the rooms so 1200 each is ok

will bid again tomorrow, if it fails, then get the hotwire deal if it is still available.

Question? is downtown ok to stay.. seems to be more business end.. only staying away as looking for more night life close to the hotel, however we could always get a cab or train

ended up getting the 4* via hotwire, it was the Hotel Indigo which we are happy with as good location and by all reports is a quality place to stay.

might try priceline for San Francisco for the 2-3 nights after NY

not as cheap as i hoped for, however we wanted to get a place booked as we heard October gets busy and didn't want to wait till the last minute.

just have to remind myself NOT to look at NY in a month or 2, finding it is cheaper and then kicking myself for going in early
