ThunderbirdNZ Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 I'm travelling with my 73y.o. mother to Manhattan in August and we have the same surname (obviously) so I don't want any embarrassing mistakes. My wife and I had a great stay at Casablance and Berkshire last time, but they don't have twin bed rooms. I'm guessing I could write a note, but if the mystery hotel has no twins then I'll be stuck won't I? (since I'm paying in advance)And no, we can't afford two rooms...
thereuare Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 Although not likely ideal, if the second 'bed' was a pullout sofabed or a rollaway brought into the room, would this be sufficient for your needs? What is your expected budget per nite? ThunderbirdNZ Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 August 14-16; 3*-4*, looking for the best deal I can find! (lol). Currently looking at stuff around $175-225 per night. A 4.5* MTC @ $245 per night has just appeared; and then just as quickly disappeared. We arrive 5pm at JFK after a 24hr flight from downunder so the 14th will be a write-off, therefore we really only have the 15th to wander around before moving on to.... Ottawa! Hence I'm thinking Times Sq may not be so bad afterall since my mother is a large woman and won't be doing any walking tours. No, not really keen on a sofa bed...
ThunderbirdNZ Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 currently seeing (for $225) 4.5-star Hotel in Midtown EastFitness Center Restaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access Spa Services and also (for $202) 4-star Hotel in Midtown EastRestaurant(s) Business Center High-Speed Internet Access We won't be using the Spa, but it indicates a better hotel, right?MTE is a bit further than I was thinking, tho'
AaronJB Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 Are you still seeing these properties when searching for these dates (8/14-16)? If so, how many people are you searching for?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 ... if the mystery hotel has no twins then I'll be stuck won't I?Have you accepted the risk of receiving a room with only one bed OR is this still an issue for this stay? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. ThunderbirdNZ Posted June 29, 2011 Author Report Posted June 29, 2011 Just looking for one room for the two of us, and hoping for twin beds. For some reason there is a premium on those, vs Kings? Weird.Currently showing MTE: $174 (3.5*) $202 & $216 (both 4*) and $223 (4.5*)TimesSq is $175-$219. The latter is 4* biut a boutique hotel so I'm guessing small and no twins?
AaronJB Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 There is definitely a premium on rooms with two beds in NYC due to the small size of rooms throughout much of the city; quite a few properties only have minimal inventory of two beds. Additionally, there is no guarantee of bed type with either service; if you search for more than two people on HOTWIRE, you should get bedding for the entire party, but that may be 2 beds or 1 + rollaway or other combination. If you are searching for two on HOTWIRE, you're likely to get one bed. If you search for more than two on HOTWIRE, prices will most likely be higher, reflecting a premium. The 4.5* MTE is a possible match for the Benjamin, while the 4* MTE is a possible match for the Kimberly. The list of HOTWIRE properties that have been reported to the board can be found here: Hotwire Hotel List. Please provide the amenities and star ratings of additional listings if you would like help confirming ID's.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
ThunderbirdNZ Posted June 29, 2011 Author Report Posted June 29, 2011 Thanks Aaron. Am I right in thinking you're advising I search for (say) 2 adults and 1 child in order to get twin beds? Would 1 adult and 1 child get a similar result?
thereuare Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 You want to search/book HOTWIRE for at least triple occupancy (or ideally quad occupancy to avoid the possibility of the hotel stating that 1King bed is for 3 people which is rare, but has happened a handful of times). The idea is that you want to book for occupancy which would require more than one bed, so 1adults/1child wouldn't suit your needs since that is still double occupancy and a parent and child could sleep in one bed. However, as noted above, the second 'bed' could be a pullout sofabed, rollaway brought into the room, etc... so you'll need to also be open to this as the second bed, which above you stated you're not keen on.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
