rca292 Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 I have been bidding for a hotel on priceline now for a few weeks and as my trip gets closer, I'm a little disappointed I haven't gotten anything. I'm looking for a 3* in the times square, central park south or midtown west areas (with times square as my preferred location). I have a back up booking at the hotel edison for $711 so I am hoping to find a better deal (either a lower price or more stars) than what I have. Can someone suggest a bidding strategy?

thereuare Posted June 27, 2011 Report Posted June 27, 2011 It appears that you would need a win at ~$120 to equal your current back-up reservation... how high have you bid already? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rca292 Posted June 27, 2011 Author Report Posted June 27, 2011 I've bid up to $133 for a 4 star and $122 for a 3.5 star. I haven't yet bid on a 3 star because I didn't really know where to start/stop. What do you think?I'm not thrilled with hotel edison but it looks all right. I would prefer to pay less than $711 for a 3 star for 5 nights. I also wouldn't mine paying up to 815ish for a 4 star (in hopes that the extra $100 I'd pay on priceline would be worth it compared to staying at the edison). Do you think it can be done or should I stick it out with what I have?
thereuare Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 Let's back up one minute if we may...Is there a reason you're only bidding the TS, CPS and MTW zones? I feel that you may be on the cusp of success for a higher rated hotel just beyond the prices you've already bid, if you included other nearby zones (which are generally considered just as convenient for the average visitor). As well, even if you don't want to bid any higher, there may be other options at the 3* level in other nearby zones.Let us know and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rca292 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 I was just trying to stay in a convenient location. It will be my first time to visit the city, do you recommend other zones? I wanted to be mostly able to walk back from the theater at night because we are planning on watching a few shows.
thereuare Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 At the 4* level MTE, MTW, CPS, TS and ESB all typically work well for the average user (at the 3.5* level there are different zone suggestions)Depending upon how much you like to walk, there are some parts of the CPS (which you're bidding) which may not be considered to be 'walkable' from the theatre district... likewise with the MTE zone (although some parts would be considered an easy walk). Most parts of ESB would not be considered walkable by most, but nothing in any of these zones is really too far from the Theatre District. It comes down to if you'd prefer a 4* (or 3.5*) hotel for your stay and then have to take a taxi (likely $10 or less) home from the theatre... or, given your rejected bids, a 3* hotel which is walkable (for what may not amount to much savings vs. a 3.5* or 4* hotel in one of the taxi-distance locations).Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rca292 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 You're right. After thinking about it, it makes more sense to stay in 3.5* or a 4* and take a taxi than to stay in a #* for about the same price. I'd like to go that route. What do you recommend? Thanks so much for all of your help : )
thereuare Posted June 28, 2011 Report Posted June 28, 2011 What i'm guessing to be the W New York appears to be on HOTWIRE for $162... you may be able to shave $10-$20 off that rate if you try bidding on PRICELINE for any 4* hotel in MTE (and possibly include other zones as well for the best price??).Do you want to try for a 4* first? If so, is ~$150 good for a maximum bid or do you have some other figure in mind? Is TS, MTW, CPS and MTE all acceptable? What about ESB?Let us know your thoughts and we'll advise accordingly. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. rca292 Posted June 28, 2011 Author Report Posted June 28, 2011 Yes, I'd like to try for a 4* first but I'm trying to stick to something under $850 total (including taxes) so I think a maximum bid of $150 is a bit high for my budget. I think $140ish is about the highest I can afford sadly : (Yes, TS, MTW, CPS and MTE are all acceptable. ESB is probably okay too. Thank you again for your help!
thereuare Posted June 29, 2011 Report Posted June 29, 2011 At the 4* level you have SIX re-bid zones.
