Hotwire Hotel: Museum Campus Hotel in Chicago

I have a friend that I am helping find a hotel room in Chicago.

There will be two people checking in on 8/20 and checking out on 8/22.

He is insisting on staying in the Museum Campus - McCormick Place - Soldier Field area because it is the closest to Northerly Island where he and his brother are going see a concert.

I don't know much about that area as I have only stayed in the Mag Mile and Loop areas myself. I have booked a 4* Loop hotel (Allegro) for $107 per night. It looks like that same hotel is available for $114 a night currently. He can get a 3* Museum Campus hotel for $89 and insists the campus area can't be that bad. Would my buddy be better off spending the extra money to stay at the Loop hotel or just go with the cheaper one? Does anybody know what kind of hotels are in the campus area? I will post the info below.

The Museum Campus - McCormick Place - Soldier Field hotel is:

3* Hotel @ $89 per night (80% recommendation)

Boutique Hotel

Smoke Free Rooms

Fitness Center

Business Center

High-Speed Internet Access

Any helps would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

The issue with this area is that there is not much in the way of hotels and a number of the hotels do not have much around. This property would likely be a match for the South Loop Hotel, which gets some pretty good reviews on Tripadvisor and much more mixed reviews on Yelp. Despite the Loop name, this property is definitely far from the Loop - it's not even really convenient to the museum campus, either. You're still looking at a taxi drive to Northerly Island from this property, and - personally - I'd rather take a taxi from the Loop where there's restaurants and things to do (if not in the Loop, nearby in the River North area) rather than take a taxi from the area around the South Loop hotel, where there definitely isn't going to be much going on. If it doesn't matter which hotel in the Loop, he could try PRICELINE and see if he could get something in the Loop or River North-NMA for a comparable price.

My friend has decided to stay in a more exciting area of the city and has found:

8/20 - 8/22

2* Magnificent Mile Area - Streeterville area hotel

$88 per night

High Speed Internet

It seems like a good idea at that price. Any ideas what hotel it might be?

It seems like a good idea at that price.

While $82 may be cheap in dollar terms, this is probably not a very good value when well reviewed 4* hotels can be had for ~$30 more (and likely even a bit less thru PRICELINE)

What is your friend's maximum budget per nite? Why not have him/her post in this thread so we can advise directly? Will you or s/he be making the actual purchase?

I am doing all the leg work to help her out. She doesn't have a computer and is on a pretty tight budget. She was hoping keep the total cost (including taxes & fees) under $120 to $130 a night.

Currently the 4* hotels in the area are $119 per night ($150 per night after taxes and fees) compared to the 2* hotel at $86 per night ($104 per night after taxes and fees).

The cheapest I have been able to find on priceline is the Congress Plaza Hotel @ $118 per night.

I would have to say that I agree with the idea of spending a bit more money for higher quality (I have booked the Allegro for this same time period - $105 per night), but as of right now cheaper seems to be they way she would like to go.

That is where we arrive at my question of what might be a possible match for this hotel so I can do a little more research.

Doing the research I have done so far, I can't even find 2* hotels in that area.

By bidding on PRICELINE she may be able to get a 3.5* or 4* hotel for the $90-$110 range.

While it appears to have made some improvements (reviews are still on the negative side, but I believe they've been worse), I really would not stay at the Congress - workers there have been on strike for 8 years - it's the longest hotel strike in the history of the United States (the 8th anniversary was a couple of weeks ago.)

PRICELINE would definitely be a better choice, and I also think that something much nicer could be had via PRICELINE for less.
