Priceline Hotel: Bidding strategy for NYC 08/06-08/16

Hi, I would like a bidding strategy please. I'll be in NYC with my husband from Aug 6 to Aug 16. We already booked a cancelable 2* at $140/night (plus taxes) but would like to spend less money if possible, or get a better hotel.

I was thinking about trying ESB, MSG, MTE, MTW, TS and CPS. Are those zones good for tourists? I have some doubts specially about MTE, 'cause it looks like there are some places there a bit far from the subway.

Would like to try for a 2.5* first, up to $100.

If not successful, increase the number of stars and the money, up to $140.

Are those expectations realistic?

Few comments...

All the 'known' 4* hotels in the MTE zone are conveniently located, but at less 4* some less convenient (up to a 15 minute walk to the subway) come into play.

Another 'warning' at less then 4* is the CPS zone which contains the Hudson Hotel. While this hotel is a 'scene' and well located, they also have notoriously small rooms (~150 sq. ft.) which may not be to your liking for such an extended stay.

Lastly, in NYC we typically suggest reaching for the higher rated hotels as quality, even within the same star level, can vary greatly, especially at the lower rated hotels. While there may be some 2.5* hotels which would be satisfactory and meet your needs, there may be some which do not, and with PRICELINE and HOTWIRE you can't choose which type you will get :)

In terms of your budget i think you have a chance at a 3.5* within your $140 budget and a very good chance at the 3* or higher rating. Sub-$100 isn't does happen from time to time in NYC, and while this low season for NYC, we typically don't see sub-$100 bid for a 10 nite stay (it's usually more often for just a solo nite or two, often for Sunday and/or weekend nites). You can certainly try, but take note of our comments above regarding the lower rated hotels in NYC.

Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there.

Very useful info! As our biggest concerns are the location and our budget, we are willing to accept small and simple rooms. So we would like to begin with 2.5*, but without MTE. Don't want to go very high on this (max $110) 'cause if we're going to spend more, then let's try a better hotel :)

So after this, if not succesful, it seems better to try for a 3.5* up to $140 and then 3*, right?

If your objective is lowest price, and assuming logic prevails that a lower rated hotel costs less then a higher rated hotel, why would you bid 2.5*, 3.5*, then 3*... it would seem you would increase your star rating sequentially and bid 2.5*, 3*, 3.5* (and increasing your maximum bid with each higher rating that you bid)

Please clarify your thoughts/goals and we'll advise further.
