Hello, Thank you in advance for your assistance. My family will be in Kauai from July 29-August 1st. We would love be in Poipu at the Grand Hyatt (obviously knowing this isn't guaranteed if we bid through priceline) Last night based on the sucessful bid of another poster, I bid up to $170 per night for a resort in Poipu and was rejected (used free re-bids and started at $135) Do you think I should wait until closer to our trip? Bid more? Would love any input and will definitely use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links here moving forward. Thanks!

Welcome to BetterBidding!

Currently hotel direct rates for your dates are $433/nite so your $170 bid is still under half of prevailing rates. As well, with rates so high, there is a chance that the hotel has not offered any deeply discounted inventory to PRICELINE (or what they have offered is not discounted too deeply). How high are you willing to bid for a Resort class property in this zone?

PS- also note that PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy... if you're only booking one room, how many guests will you be?

Thanks so much for getting back to me. So, I suppose I need to speak to my husband about our absolute cap for this resort, we would love to get it, but definitely can't swallow the "rack rate"! :) I'm thinking $230 might be our limit. Should we wait until closer to the stay to bid up to our limit? iS there any sort of 'formula" for % of price listed vs. price accepted on name your own price?

We have a family of 4, two adults, two children. Is that considered more than double occupancy?

Yes, 2adults and 2chidlren is four people total.. which would be quad occupancy.

PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, after that it's at the discretion of the hotel, and you could receive a room with only one bed. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request. Is this a risk you're willing to accept? If not, HOTWIRE may still be an option as they allow you to search for up to quad occupancy and ensure sleeping accommodations for everyone you include in your search (although this usually means two beds, the second 'bed' could be a sofabed, rollaway, etc)

As long as the hotel is fine with us sleeping a quad in a double-occupancy room, we are totally fine with it. Our kids are small and would think that sleeping on the floor (or with Mommy and Daddy) would be a great adventure! :) Honestly, with a resort so amazing, I'm hoping we are only in our room to sleep and shower - the rest of the time we want to be outside! :)

You don't know the hotel that you will receive, and therefore don't know their policy and if they would be ok with it. When the extra guests are small children it's usually a bit easier to 'slip by', but you never know when you will receive a hotel (or desk clerk) that cares and/or when you may receive a hotel where quad occupancy may exceed fire code limits.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll advise accordingly.

I'm doubtful that you'll be successful, but if you want to give it a try:

When bidding Resort in this area you have ONE re-bid zone. If you're not familiar with re-bidding please read Priceline Re-Bidding Explained and feel free to ask questions and/or confirm your re-bid zones with the board before proceeding.

Select Resort Poipu...

Bid $180, if rejected add re-bid zone...

Bid $190

If the above is rejected try again every 24 hours using the following bid pairs:

$200/$210

$215/$220

$225/$230

This will have you to your maximum bid in 3 days and if still rejected you can decide your next move from there.

Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.

Keep us updated. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thank you, I think that something must be going on at the resort for my dates - as you mentioned the advertised priceline rate is now up to $525 a night for my dates, while others who have won have advertised prices in the $300 range earlier dates in July. I suppose it doesn't hurt to continue to try, we do have a cancelable reservation as a back-up at another resort.

Tried up to $190 a night tonight - will continue to try and see what happens. :)

Just wanted to check back in and report that I decided to split up our days and was able to get the Grand Hyatt for 7/29 and 7/30 for $185 a night (priceline has it for $329), but still haven't been sucessful for 7/31 (priceline shows it as $580 that night). We might have to stay somewhere else that night. Anyhow, thanks for your help! Used the PRICELINE link here and will be back agan for sure.

Nice to see you were able to get a great deal for at least the first 2 nites of your stay... and it was the hotel you were hoping for.

Thank you for sharing your win and using the PRICELINE links on the board to begin your bidding.
