Used the PRICELINE like to begin with.

First, I bid for 4* hotels up to $70 in 'Downtown San Diego & Harbor Island' and 'San Diego Coastal', but didn't get a deal.

Then bid for 3.5* hotel up to $65 in 'Downtown San Diego & Harbor Island' and 'San Diego Coastal', but didn't get a deal.

Then bid for 3* hotel up to $55 in 'Downtown San Diego & Harbor Island' and 'San Diego Coastal', but didn't get a deal.

Then added 'Del Mar - Rancho Santa Fe' (with 3* hotel), then bid at $55, 57, 59 - got a deal at $59.

After it accepted my bid, I got a message saying "We’ve upgraded your hotel quality level to a 3
