bigredsfan Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Hi Guyscan't find anything on previous threads so will start one here...my 10 year old daughter would loveeee to visit the American Girl Store in New York City. My understanding is that it is in the Midtown East Zone. Looking at hotels, of course they are not cheap, and I was hoping anybody would have a tip on somehow finding one in the $150/night range. We would likely be looking for 2 nights due to price, and in proximity tot he store which I think is on 5th Ave. I know it's expensive, but can anybody helpe out here finding a reasonable hotel nearby...?Cheers and thanks...on a side note, we are also a family of 5, not picky of where to stay, just not a flea bag..we are also thinking of going sometime in July or August
thereuare Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Few comments to start...PRICELINE only guarantees double occupancy, after that it's at the discretion of the hotel, and you could receive a room with only one bed. While you can call the hotel you win and request a room with two beds, the hotel may not be able, or willing, to honor your request. This is especially true in NYC where there are a high percentage of rooms with only one bed and rooms with two beds are often considered an upgrade. Is this a risk you're willing to accept? HOTWIRE allow searching for up to quad occupancy, so you'd still be one over the limit. It's difficult to find a 'standard room' in NYC which will accommodate 5 people.Regardless of how you decide to move forward, you really don't need to stay right near the American Doll store (which is in the edge of the MTE and Times Square zones)... midtown NYC is so compact, and mass transit relatively inexpensive and easily accessible, that you'll easily be able to get to the store (and most other places in Manhattan) from most places in Midtown. However, the bigger issue, assuming you only intended to get one room, is occupancy for five. Let us know your thoughts in this regard and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. bigredsfan Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 thanks for the great reply! I assume occupancy would be an issue for us, so we would be open to two rooms as long as it didn't kill the budget we would have to set. That being said, if we could get to the store via public transit, or even get to that area via transit that would work too. If we found a hotel outside of the hot spot pricing zone that would be ideal.Cheers
thereuare Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Is your budget still $150 total for two rooms... as $75 per room per nite in NYC is going to be very hard to come by. What would be your desired star level? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. bigredsfan Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 I realize we likely won't get a room for that price but I was hoping to lodge us all for somewhere around $125. I also know that for that price there is likely no way to get a room in the main hub, but on the outside is fine as long public transport can get us to the 5th Ave area. I would think a 3* or so hotel would maybe fit that budget, but not sure as I have never been to NYC.
AaronJB Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 $125 may be more likely during the hotter period of late July-early August. Additionally, there is another AG store in Chicago, which very well may be a more inexpensive alternative. Not sure how much there is to the store, but there's also an American Girl Outlet store in Oshkosh, WI - that could be a side trip if it would offer enough to make the trip there worthwhile (American Girl HQ is just outside of Madison, WI, but there doesn't appear to be anything there for visitors.) The Chicago Suburbs also offer reasonable/very reasonable hotels if you're driving.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.

bigredsfan Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 main hub I guess would be the manhattan area. We could stay outside of NYC as long as Mass Transit wasn't going to make it to much of a venture with little ones...Chicago would be great but we are in the Toronto area, so the drive would be a killer. Closest store to drive is likely going to be NYC. WI would be great, but distance is not ideal to drive. Thanks for the reply!
thereuare Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 You can start by plugging various dates into HOTWIRE for a 4* hotel in Jersey City... the 4* hotels are convenient to mass transit, less then 4* can be hit or miss if you're near transportation (and some are in areas you don't want to be). If that's not in the budget then look at Secaucus, NJ. This will at least give you a sense of what might be possible as you get closer to determining your actual dates. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. bigredsfan Posted June 14, 2011 Author Report Posted June 14, 2011 thanks, will do some research now...any idea quality of transit from Jersey City to the Manhattan area? Is distance somewhat close?
thereuare Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 The Waterfront area of Jersey City (which is the only part of Jersey City you really want to be) is very close to Manhattan... any closer and you'll be in the Hudson River :) However, note that HOTWIRE and PRICELINE each use different zone boundaries for this area... with PRICELINE you should have easy access to transportation just about anywhere in the zone... with HOTWIRE the zone extends to Rte1&9 (Tonnelle Ave) which is not where you want to stay. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. bigredsfan Posted June 15, 2011 Author Report Posted June 15, 2011 ah, great info again thanks...you should be a travel agent and make some coin on the side here for NYC newbies like me! :)All is so complicated when you factor in we have 3 kids...
bigredsfan Posted June 20, 2011 Author Report Posted June 20, 2011 just an update here...not sure we can now find the time to get away in the Summer so may have to pass on NYC, which is too bad. Wife wants to cruise in late Fall, so may look to spend money I don't have then :)Cheers and thanks for all the tips, may revisit.

bigredsfan Posted June 21, 2011 Author Report Posted June 21, 2011 Thanks for closing this thread with your decision. If you think a hotel room is tough with 5 people wait until you look at cruises! :)heck, we did a 5 night on the Carnival Destiny last Fall with 5 of us in a cabin. Wasn't too bad as the cabins are about 210 sq ft. We have 2 young ones so space isn't too much of an issue yet....but it is had finding cruises and lines that carry 5 in a cabin. Many have to get two cabins which is more $$$$..
thereuare Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 ...but it is had finding cruises and lines that carry 5 in a cabin. Many have to get two cabins which is more $$$$..Yup, that was my point.
