austintx Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 OK, my wife made plans (plane tickets) before realizing this was Tony Awards weekend. Now it looks like rooms are more expensive and hard to get than other times.Criteria: 1. Safety, cleanliness, and location are more important than luxury features and large rooms.2. Willing to split into weekday (Wed/Thurs) and weekend (Fri/Sat/Sun) at different hotels/areas.3. Need 2 rooms or a full-size room with 2 queen beds (4 travleing). 4. Want to stay around $250-$275 avg/night for the rooms.5. I think most 3* would work. I see a lot of "basic" chains in those lists which is OK.6. Pretty open to areas. Worried about MTE because the Millenium and Beekman are so far from. With 3* being acceptable, I'm not sure what the re-bid strategy would be. Most of the threads I have seen are re-bidding with 4* using areas that don't have that level. Thanks for any help!
thereuare Posted May 26, 2011 Report Posted May 26, 2011 To clarify:3. Need 2 rooms or a full-size room with 2 queen beds (4 travleing). 4. Want to stay around $250-$275 avg/night for the rooms. Is this target room rate the same whether you are seeking one room or two, as there is a big difference in budget if you're looking for one room for quad occupancy at $250/nite vs. two rooms for double occupancy at $250/nite.Please confirm and we'll have a closer look at what is available/possible.Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. austintx Posted May 26, 2011 Author Report Posted May 26, 2011 The total target rate is the same. On Priceline I have to go for 2 rooms since they are pretty much guaranteed to be small 1 bed rooms. So on those I was hoping to stay below $140. I have never used Hotwire, but from researching here it seemed like finding something with 2 queen beds is an option there. In that case my target would be below $275. Thanks.
thereuare Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 I have never used Hotwire, but from researching here it seemed like finding something with 2 queen beds is an option there.Sort of... you can ensure sleeping accommodations for four people, but the bed types/room configuration is not guaranteed. The room could have two doubles (ie- not Queens) or the room could only have one bed and a pullout sofabed. Would this work for your needs? You do have some options, but let us know if the possibility of one bed plus a sofabed (or rollaway brought into the room) is a deal breaker of if you could make that work. Also, to confirm, are you four adults... or 2adults/2children?Let us know the above and we'll provide some suggestions. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. austintx Posted May 27, 2011 Author Report Posted May 27, 2011 2 adults and 2 high school/college age children. All women so I think it will have to be 2 rooms. That will work better for bathroom facilities anyway.
thereuare Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 You'll need to split this stay, and it think you'll be able to get two rooms for the weekend nites within your budget but near the top end of the range (~$135/nite per room), but for the first 2 nites you'll need to make some compromises... either increase your budget to ~$150/nite per room OR stay 4 to a room the first 2 nites for ~$200/nite.Let us know your thoughts and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. austintx Posted May 27, 2011 Author Report Posted May 27, 2011 Yes, I was expecting to split - Wed/Thurs and Fri/Sat/Sun. I'm willing to go 3* but I don't see any re-bid zones except Coney Island. I don't know how often others have used that as a re-bid at the 3* level. I'm a little nervous I might wind up getting a 3* there that no one has seen before. I'm thinking I'll use those to re-bid at the 3* level. If I bid at 3.5* or 4*, I haven't seen much evidence that I'll find anything in the central part of Manhattan at or below $150 even on the weekend. I'm ready to start bidding though! And being at the upper end of my target is OK if that is the best I can do. I don't have an option on travelling. If I can limit going over the target to just the 2 week nights that is also acceptable.
thereuare Posted May 27, 2011 Report Posted May 27, 2011 Have you see the Priceline Re-Bidding Explained thread and know how to determine (and double check just before bidding) your re-bid zones? Please click this PRICELINE link and reply to this thread, we'll then suggest a strategy for you to follow. Please use the requested PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board each time you access the respective site(s). austintx Posted May 27, 2011 Author Report Posted May 27, 2011 Yes. I know Coney Island doesn't show anything at 3* but it still makes me nervous. :) What I saw today was:Brooklyn - 3.5*LIC - 3*UES - 3*QSB - 3*CI - 2*BTW, with the wins I have seen I am thinking the W Downtown might be the best option for Wed/Thurs. They can do the south end attractions 2 days and then move up to midtown. Also, I am not as positive on MSG and to a lesser extent ESB from what others have told me (rougher areas? less convenient). I was going to leave those out of most bidding. Is that a reasonable concern?
thereuare Posted May 28, 2011 Report Posted May 28, 2011 Yes. I know Coney Island doesn't show anything at 3* but it still makes me nervous.Should we include ONE re-bid zone in the bidding strategy or not?BTW, with the wins I have seen I am thinking the W Downtown might be the best option for Wed/Thurs.Do you have reason to believe this is available for the first 2 nites of the trip? For the first 2 nites do you prefer to try for one room for quad occupancy (closer to your budget) or two rooms for double occupancy each (over your preferred budget)Also, I am not as positive on MSG and to a lesser extent ESB from what others have told me (rougher areas? less convenient). I was going to leave those out of most bidding. Is that a reasonable concern?I don't think those are a concern, but just like re-bidding, you need to be comfortable with whatever zones/methods you choose to employ. However, to try to stay close to your budget, you don't have that many options, imo. Plus it will be cramped so the fewer nights the better. I don't think those are a concern, but just like re-bidding, you need to be comfortable with whatever zones/methods you choose to employ. thereuare Posted May 29, 2011 Report Posted May 29, 2011 OK, let's work on the tail end of your stay first, so to confirm...You're looking for a 3* or better hotel in the MTW, TS, CPS, ESB or MSG zones with a maximum bid of $150? (DO NOTE that this includes the Hudson Hotel which has very small rooms, so this would need to be acceptable to you before you start bidding)If the above is correct i'd bid as follows (if any of the above is not correct please clarify and we'll revise accordingly):Select 3* MTW and TS...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* ESB and MSG and CPS...Bid $105, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $110, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* ESB and TS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MTW and MSG and CPS...Bid $115, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $120, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG and TS...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* ESB and MTW and CPS...Bid $125, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $130, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG and TS and ESB and MTW...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MSG and TS and ESB and CPS...Bid $135, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $140, if rejected close browser and use this link to re-access PRICELINESelect 3* MTW and TS and CPS and ESB and MSG...Bid $145, if rejected add re-bid zone...Bid $150If you have the time you can try the above for each of the following date combinations:6/8-6/136/9-6/136/10-6/13I'm doubtful the first two will be successful but if you have the time it's worth a shot. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.Any questions feel free to ask... good luck and let us know how it goes. Here is the data for what I tried.Started with 4* for mid-week (6/8 & 6/9) to see what would happen. Went over budget to try to get a better room since I already knew it was going to be expensive.
