NYC2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Hi everyone,I am new to the forum and would like to get some advice on our pending travel to NYC. We are hoping to stay in Time Square. We have a total of 6 adults and 2 kids in our group. I am thinking of booking 3 rooms. From reading the posts here, it seems risky to expect 2 beds in a room. If we book 4* hotels, is the chance better that we get 2 beds (king beds work, too)? Also, is it too early to bid now? and what's the reasonable price for this time period? Thanks!
AaronJB Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 Welcome to Betterbidding. :)Unfortunately, with the small nature of NYC hotel rooms, it is risky to expect two beds, even in a 4* property (the 3.5* Hudson and Roosevelt have rooms that are about 130-160 sq ft and rooms so small that they cannot fit a rollaway are not uncommon at all star levels in NYC.)October is a busy time period in NYC and I would recommend exploring options and making initial bids now. What would be your desired budget per night, and which zones would be of interest?Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
NYC2011 Posted May 25, 2011 Author Report Posted May 25, 2011 Thanks for the reply. I am hoping to get a 4* hotel under $250 in Time Square a
thereuare Posted May 25, 2011 Report Posted May 25, 2011 What are your thoughts regarding the double/triple occupancy issue above... is this a risk you're willing to accept OR do you prefer to use HOTWIRE which will cost you a little more, but you can select up to quad occupancy per room?Regardless of what you decide about the occupancy issue, i'd suggest considering expanding your acceptable zones outside of Times Square as you can still be very centrally located and not be in Times Square (where you will likely spend far less time then you think). NYC2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 Hi,Could you help me ID this hotel? 4* Times Square $352 from 10/5 - 10/8Fitness centerRestaurantBusiness CenterHigh-Speed Internet AccessIt seems to be the only hotel available. I chose the option of all star, 4* and above, 3* and above. It all came up with this same one. Thanks!
NYC2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 I tried again to bid 4* TS (my target area) + Brooklyn + coney Islands + Long Island City + MS + QB + UES for 3 rooms from 10/5 to 10/8I increased my bid to $300 and still no luck. It seems like priceline bidding doesn't give a lot of discount as I expected. When I bid, priceline gave me $370 as the average 4* hotel in the area. Is the hotel usually very expensive around this time? Can I expect the hotel to lower the price a little? Thanks!
AaronJB Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Are you still seeing the 4* TS when searching? I'm not seeing it coming up whens earching on HOTWIRE.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
NYC2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 I just tried again. It's still there. 4* $352
thereuare Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 I see the Times Square property when searching 2rooms/6adults/2children... this property matches the Crowne Plaza, Inter-Continental Times Square, Millenium Broadway and the Hilton Times Square, so any of these would be likely candidates. This is a busy time of year in NYC and when rates go up, even though there is more margin for the hotel, the level of discount often goes down since the higher rates are indicative of strong demand. If hotels are seeing strength in bookings, they'd rather hold onto the rooms and try to sell themselves (at full price) rather then offer a deep discount. As well, it's still very early for this stay, and if hotels are seeing any signs of strong demand, they're more inclined to not discount inventory too much this much before the dates. While this suggests you may see lower rates down the road, the corollary is that if demand continues strong (or gets stronger) you can see rates move even higher and/or hotels eventually sell out.Are you only bidding the Times Square zone? (if so, this is another explanation for the difficulty you're having with this stay... see our thoughts on Hotels Near Times Square. How high are you willing to bid before considering other zone(s) and/or lowering your star level? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. NYC2011 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 What I opt to do now is holding hotel rooms thru priceline's pay as you stay option. By doing this, I limit the Max. I need to pay and no risk of not getting a room. I will wait and hope that the price will come down further. I will update the result if I eventually got a bid. Thanks for the help!
