Slide Posted May 5, 2011 Report Posted May 5, 2011 Hi,First time user of the site and looking for advice on how to get the best bang for my buck. I've recently learned that I'll be needing to go to NYC for business on Thursday May 11, and as such, looking to parley this into a longer stay from May 12th to May 14th. Preference is to stay at a 4* in mid-town for around $225/night (Times Square is also an option) Given that prices in that area are currently in the low $300's...is this wishful thinking? If not, how do I pull this off? Do I need to set my sights lower and go for 3.5*? Also read the Pricing strategy FAQ, and welcome thoughts from more experienced users on whether to wait a few more days (since my trip is next week), or book ASAP.ThanksPS - will use the BetterBidding Link when booking

busboss Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 I thought this was the Hotwire forum? All of the tips are for Priceline.
thereuare Posted May 6, 2011 Report Posted May 6, 2011 The OP may have posted in the HOTWIRE section of the board first, but then also considered PRICELINE... so that others following the thread can easily find it we keep all posts in the same section (unless incorrectly posted in the wrong STATE category) until a win is made. Once a hotel is won/received we'll then move to the correct section of the board if a different service was used then where the thread is currently posted. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Slide Posted May 7, 2011 Author Report Posted May 7, 2011 Did as you suggested and nothing came up at the $225 price point. Should I try in a few days or change strategies? I'm open to paying more than $225 if that helps.
AaronJB Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 I'm a little surprised that $225 was not accepted, but I think you're likely not too far off. I'd try $230, then $235 if $230 is not accepted, then $240 is $235 doesn't go. However, I would hope that a bid would be accepted before having to go to the $240 level. Overall, I definitelly don't think you're far off, though.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
thereuare Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 While you lose the 'feel' of the city, how about staying across the river in Hoboken? What appears to be the W Hotel is available for $159/nite... it's a very nice hotel, has fantastic views of the Manhattan Skyline, and is just a 15 minute PATH ride (24/7) into midtown... not to mention Hoboken has a lively bar/restaurant scene as well.Thoughts? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Slide Posted May 7, 2011 Author Report Posted May 7, 2011 Fantastic deal but because I often stay in Newark and flying out of LGA Saturday afternoon, I rather maximize my time by staying in the city.
thereuare Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 HOTWIRE has a 4* in Chelsea for $235, a 4* in ESB for $259 and a 4* in Times Square for $241... and while star ratings for the same hotel may differ between HOTWIRE and PRICELINE, i would at least keep these figures in mind when increasing your PRICELINE bids, so that if you begin to hit $235, explore these options further to see if they can be identified and/or acceptable for your needs.OR EVEN BETTER...Split your stay:For 5/12 HOTWIRE has a 4* in the MTC zone for $138/nite OR a Jersey City hotel (not the W Hotel) for $174For 5/13 HOTWIRE has a 4* hotel in the MTE zone for $137/niteYou could of course try PRICELINE to beat each of the above rates, but i wouldn't mess around with it for too long since the rates for each of these are substantially lower then anything else i'm seeing for these dates (collectively or individually) and can disappear at any time.Perhaps not the ideal situation, but compared to your failed 4* bids above, looks like you can save nearly $100 per nite, which for $200 i would gladly change hotels. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Slide Posted May 7, 2011 Author Report Posted May 7, 2011 Thanks for the great help. For the 12th, I was able to book the Algonquin (Smoke Free Rooms, Fitness CenterRestaurant(s), High-Speed Internet Access) and 13th is the W New York (Fitness CenterRestaurant(s), Business Center, High-Speed Internet Access, Spa Services)
AaronJB Posted May 7, 2011 Report Posted May 7, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)Very nice deal for both properties! We'll use this thread for the W stay; it would be greatly appreciated if you could post a separate thread for the Algonquin.Thank you for sharing your win and using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
