homeboy Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Hi All,I just found out about this forum and think it's pretty cool. I'm totally new to priceline and have a trip to New York planned from June 27 to July 2. I'm visiting New York for the first time as a tourist to see all the major attractions. I have a pretty tight budget because I'm going a few other places - looking at spending $90-$105/night. I already got a room at the Larchmont hotel in Grenich village for I found on Expedia for $90/night - but am curious if I can do better on Priceline (the room is basically just a place to sleep with shared bathroom - but great location and good tripadvisor reviews)I've narrowed down my areas to the following - just because I like the idea of being in a central area near all the attractions in Manhattan. I don't know anything about new york, but I've read online that downtown is quiet after business hours and UES/UWS hotels can be far from mid-town attractions.Central Park SouthChelsea AreaEmpire State BuildingMadison Square GardenMidtown EastMidtown WestTime Square - Theatre DistrictAny suggestions on bidding strategy? I've tried throwing in a few bids between $90-$105 with no luck. Any suggested strategies? Are my expectations so out of the ballpark it's not worth trying? I'm not even sure what a 2 star entails since I'm not well traveled. Any advice would be fantastic.homey
thereuare Posted May 3, 2011 Report Posted May 3, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding! You can/should try, but at the moment your budget is probably a little low for these dates... about $120 or so would likely increase your chances of success.Have you bid all zones above up to $105 at the 3* level? Is SPLITTING YOUR PRICELINE BID an option? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. homeboy Posted May 3, 2011 Author Report Posted May 3, 2011 Thanks for the tips! I've tried bidding all zones up to $110 without any luck. I'm a little hesitant to try splitting my bid because I am loathe to move across town with my luggage partway through my vacation.I guess my question at this point is - is there any realistic chance of my bid being accepted later on? I thought I saw something about a "bid early or bid late" strategy. If I try again a month before or a week before, do I have a better shot?Cheers!homey
thereuare Posted May 4, 2011 Report Posted May 4, 2011 Yes, there is a chance your bid may be accepted later on... or prices can move even higher then they are currently, it's all based upon supply/demand and how actual reservations come in relative to expectations. The "Bid Early or Late" thread discusses this further, and a link to that thread can be found in our PRICELINE FAQ.Summer is typically slow season for NYC, but sub-$100 wins are usually only seen on the slowest of days, and may be difficult for this 5 nite stay which mostly cover midweek nites (which in NYC are usually busier then weekend nites)Let us know how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
