keith123 Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Hi all,First post plus I'm from Ireland so be nice :)I saw the hotel list for the 4* hotels for hotwire on this site but is this a definite list? Is there any unlisted there? Also is it wise to book this early or should I wait - are the best hotels if I book now or closer to the actual date when they know they have rooms free?I'll be booking for 2 Adults and 2 Children so will I get 2 Double beds by default? Thanks in advance for any info.Keith

keith123 Posted April 24, 2011 Author Report Posted April 24, 2011 Ah I see - good stuff I've clicked the links :)
AaronJB Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 There is no way to know for sure how traffic will fare between now and your dates of travel, and rates can definitely go higher or stay around the same levels if traffic stays on the high side for this period, which is usually busy w/nicer weather. The HOTWIRE lists are only what has been reported to the board and new hotels can be reported at any time. However, the lists for the downtown Chicago areas include most of the downtown hotels, so there aren't many that have not yet been reported at this point. If you're driving, you can stay outside the city and that is much cheaper, but requires a round trip on the train to get into the city and back.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
keith123 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 Hey Aaron,You seem to be the go to guy for Chicago but it's open for all to answer :)I'm going to book this in the coming days and I just noticed that the location says the following:This property is 10.0 km - 12.0 km from Magnificent Mile Area - Streeterville in the area below. Now, below that is the green area that's highlighted in the magnificent mile area - it seems a bit confusing that it says it's it's going to be 10-12km away from the area.Any idea what's going on here?ThanksKeith
AaronJB Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Please provide the amenities showing with the listing (as well as zone and star rating) and I would be happy to take a look.Additionally, in terms of the map on the second page, that is not from the hotel but from the center of the zone.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
keith123 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 4.5* Mag Mile/Streeterville Smoke-free, fitness, business, restaurant, internet.
AaronJB Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 This 4.5* Mag Mile/Streeterville listing is possibly the Conrad or Intercontinental, but the Intercontinental is the more likely of the two.Thank you for using the site's HOTWIRE or PRICELINE links to start your purchases and searches.
keith123 Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 Thought so - thanks!I'll post what I get in the next day or so.
AaronJB Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Happy to help! :)Please let us know if you have any other hotel or city questions, and what you decide. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
keith123 Posted July 3, 2011 Author Report Posted July 3, 2011 Yep it was the InterContinential - booked for 2 nights. I used your HOTWIRE links above.I did compare it to the official web site and it looks like I made a 70 Euro ($100) savings - not too bad. Thanks for all the help!I'll probably use this again for my stop overs along route 66 :) PS- I'd change the title of this post to 4.5* .... instead of 4*
AaronJB Posted July 4, 2011 Report Posted July 4, 2011 Congrats on your success. :)Glad you are pleased with the result - this is a well-located and historic property (the beautiful pool was originally built in 1929 and was one of the first public pools on a high floor.) If you are driving, parking at Navy Pier nearby is cheaper. Can you confirm the price per night so that we can update the site's Priceline and Hotwire Calendar of Wins? Thanks. Please let us know if you need help for additional stops. Thanks for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to start your purchases and searches.Enjoy your stay.
keith123 Posted July 4, 2011 Author Report Posted July 4, 2011 The price details where as follows:HotelRate per night: €100.97 Nights: 2 (30th July - 1st Aug) Rooms: 1 (2 Adults + 2 Children)Tax recovery charges & fees: €41.98 Subtotal: €243.91 Normal Price on the Intercontential Web Site would of been $518 (€357)Thanks for the tip on parking - I will be driving! :)The hotel does have a few dodgey reviews on Tripadvisor which kinda worries me but the location is perfect that's the main thing plus it's only for 2 nights. Is there any parking web site I can check out so I know which one to go to near navy pier? After Chicago this is where I expect to be each day after: (I'll probably need to go through hotwire again for the large cities for a couple of nights in places such as Vegas, LA and San Fran - if you've recommendations let me know)Route 66 MapThanks againKeith
AaronJB Posted July 4, 2011 Report Posted July 4, 2011 There's quite a bit of variation likely within the rooms, given that this is an older property that went through a pretty extensive renovation before it became an Intercontinental years ago. There are a number of garages/lots to the East of this property between there and Navy Pier, although Navy Pier is most likely going to be cheaper than any of the lots. It's really not a bad walk from Navy Pier to this property at all, and that may be a good choice rather than trying to compare prices in lots. You would walk West on Illinois from Navy Pier to the corner of Columbus and Illinois, and there's a staircase on the NW corner of that intersection, and walk up that, then continue walking West to Michigan Ave and the Intercontinental is right there.Fox and Obel Market and Cafe (fox-obel.com) is on Illinois and McClurg in-between the Intercontinental and Navy Pier, and that's a really nice place to browse around - but it's really a pretty easy walk from NP to the Intercontinental. In terms of St Louis, I really think that some of the outer areas (Chesterfield, for example) are really nice and hotels in these outlying areas are usually quite cheap and offer the benefit of free parking. There are some areas that are closer to the city (Forest Park/Clayton), but these properties in some cases do charge for parking. Definitely post in the Missouri forum and we would be happy to help with this portion of the stay.I did like the Intercontinental when I stayed there, and do think that it's a nice property with a mix of old-world grand and modern. The pool area is worth a look even if you're not going for a swim, and the grand ballroom is gorgeous.
