I have made a few bids on priceline staring at 100$ and upping it in increments of approximately 5 to 127$ with no luck. Wanted to know is it better for me to try closer to the date? Dont really want to pay more than 130$/ 140$.

Nobody can say whether rates will come down, or move even higher, between now and your stay... it will all be based upon how actual reservations/cancellations come in relative to expectations.

However, current rates are high for these dates and unless you see a pretty big change in rates, something is going to have to 'give'... either you'll need to increase your budget, lower your star rating or consider adding nearby zones.

Managed to land 4* Hyatt Regency Century Plaza for $ 135 per night a couple of days back on Priceline.
