shorttasha Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 Hello, I hope someone can help us. :) This is our first attempt at using Priceline to book a hotel for NYC. We will be in NYC April 28th - May 2nd. It was a last minute holiday to go and arrange things for our wedding next year. We've been to NYC quite a few times but never used Priceline - no time like the present! We don't mind where we are as long as there is space for two people to sleep (double preferably, but twin would be fine) and close to the subway in Manhattan. As it's such short notice, does anybody know of any particularly good offers going at the moment? As long as it's clean, we're not too picky. Around $200 a night would be great, but we're quite flexible if it's a particularly good deal.We have read the links and know how to increase bids and areas etc.Thank you in advance!
thereuare Posted April 18, 2011 Report Posted April 18, 2011 We don't mind where we are as long as... close to the subway in Manhattan.Welcome to BetterBidding! When you bid on PRICELINE there is no way to select 'close to the subway'... you're hotel can be anywhere in the zone at the star level (or higher) that you select.Generally speaking at the 3* and 3.5* level:CPS - contains the Hudson Hotel which has notoriously small rooms, would this be accetpable?Chelsea - generally 'ok' but the zone does extend somewhat far west (ie- further away from subways)Downtown - less convenient then midtown, about 20-25 minute subway ride, but can offer some good value for difficult datesESB - should be fine/centrally located, although zone can extend somewhat EastHells Kitchen - few hotels reported here, zone does go somewhat WestMSG - should be fine and centrally locatedMTE - some hotels can be up to a 15 minute walk to the subwayMTW - should be centrally locatedTS - should be centrally locatedUES - few hotels reported here, goes somewhat far east and north and many locations may be 10-15 minute walk to the subwayUWS - goes a bit too far north, imoBased upon the above let us know which zone(s) you're willing to accept and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Also, a 3.5* may be a bit of a stretch, but did you want to try for that first up to your limit, then if rejected try for a 3* hotel... OR is your goal the least expensive 3* or better? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. shorttasha Posted April 18, 2011 Author Report Posted April 18, 2011 Thank you for the reply! You have given me much more of an idea of which areas to focus on. Before you replied we we struggling to bid because we thought we'd be happy with anywhere. I think we'd like to focus on getting the best hotel/location possible rather than the best price, if that makes sense? Therefore, I think any 3 or 3.5* in TS, MTW would be great, but doesn't everybody want that?! The Hudson looks very trendy and I love the style but you're right they are small rooms, if it was only 1 or 2 nights I wouldn't have a problem, but maybe it's not ideal for 4 nights. I'll have to talk to 'him' and get his opinion!I look forward to seeing your strategy and of course I'll use your links :)
thereuare Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 While $200 may be a bit of a stretch for a 3.5* for these dates, i would start there, bidding the following zones:MTW, TS, ESB, MSG (and CPS depending upon your thoughts on the small room issue discussed above)Once you decide/confirm which zone(s) you're willing to bid let us know and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow. Thanks in advance for using the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board. shorttasha Posted April 19, 2011 Author Report Posted April 19, 2011 Thank you again for the reply. We think those zones would suit us well... but maybe not CPS for now (we'll add it if no luck with other zones). Maybe a 3* would be fine too, we just need somewhere clean as it's only a trip to organise wedding bits and pieces and we can focus on higher end hotels (4*+) for the stay for the actual wedding.
thereuare Posted April 19, 2011 Report Posted April 19, 2011 Maybe a 3* would be fine too, we just need somewhere clean...There is variation within any star rating... while most/many 3* hotels may suit your needs fine, there may be some which do not, and with PRICELINE you can't choose which type you will get. In NYC my advice would be to 'reach' for the highest star level your budget will allow. While there can be disappointment and/or service issues at any star level, the lower in star rating you go the higher the risk (and vice versa). If you can get a 3.5* within your budget that's great... but if you have to lower to 3* then it will probably turn out 'ok' as well (although the risk of getting something which you may not like increases a bit)Ultimately it's up to you how you want to proceed, trying to strike a balance between what you are seeking for this stay vs. budget.Let us know if you want to try for a 3.5* first up to your budget or if you want to try for the least expensive 3* or better for this stay. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
