Subbass32 Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Hello!Have been looking at Hotwire and other sites for a place for our family to stay for a college grad event. Hotwire is in the 225 range for Manattan , hoping to do better, but seems to be a difficult week. Willing to split week, or stay in Brooklyn ( need to be near subway ) Brooklyn has 3.5* for 126-133 but only by excluding mon 5/16. We are very flexible as far as location and star level. Need a room with two beds so Priceline is out unless I can get two rooms very cheap. I have lots of experience with Hotwire, and have NEVER had a bad room booked thru them. But the only rooms in NYC I have booked have been for one person for a night or two, so this is a new thing for me. It seems that mid-May is a tough time to get any discounts in NYC so I am looking for any possible hints or tips. I have had success buying late in the game the past but always has been for 1/2 persons, and short stay. Hoping to stay as far under 200/nite as possible. Any tips or hints that may help? Thanks,Nick
thereuare Posted April 11, 2011 Report Posted April 11, 2011 Welcome to BetterBidding! Are you 2adults/2children? How about Hoboken-Jersey City where what i'm guessing what is the Westin Newport is available for $165/nite... easy PATH train access to Manhattan.Would this work for your needs/budget?Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.PS- please read your messages Please use this HOTWIRE and these PRICELINE LINKS: HOTELS, CAR RENTALS, and AIRFARE to begin your travel purchases
Subbass32 Posted April 11, 2011 Author Report Posted April 11, 2011 Thanks for the idea, I will check the Jersey side. My preference would be so stay in NY so we dont have to deal with both MTA and PATH, but I'll look into it.Yes we have two adults, two kids. A Hotel with a breakfast included would be a huge help, as well. Thanks for your help, I look forward to any other tips anyone might have.Nick

Subbass32 Posted April 12, 2011 Author Report Posted April 12, 2011 Thanks! A couple of thoughts- we will be using the hotel as a place to sleep and ideally eat breakfast and thats it. So a 4* isnt something we need, but that is indeed a good deal. the cost of 4 13 dollar path passes raises the average daily cost closer to being in Manhattan, I think we would be Ok with a lower star rating, the caveat being it must be near PATH or MTA wherever we stay ( not an issue in Manhattan of course ) Long Island City/Elmhurst is an option but it looks like being near a subway is not so easy there.
thereuare Posted April 12, 2011 Report Posted April 12, 2011 the cost of 4 13 dollar path passes raises the average daily cost closer to being in ManhattanNot really... even all-in you'd still be quite a bit under a Manhattan hotel for these dates.I think we would be Ok with a lower star rating, the caveat being it must be near PATH or MTA wherever we stay ( not an issue in Manhattan of course ) Long Island City/Elmhurst is an option but it looks like being near a subway is not so easy there. If staying outside of the Manhattan you'll have to take an educated guess as to the hotel being offered based upon the amenities shown before your purchase in order to determine if it's near a subway station... and hope you guess correctly. :)Other than the Brooklyn hotel, which was only available within your budget for 3 of the 4 nites, was there anything which met your star rating and budget criteria for this stay? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Subbass32 Posted April 12, 2011 Author Report Posted April 12, 2011 Hmm I have been looking at some places in Long Island City that seem reasonable and well reviewed, plus many have easy subway access. HOTWIRE has a 2.5* for 115 but it appears to be the Holiday Inn Maspeth, which is not near a subway. There is a 2* listed for 92, any ideas on what that might be? Shows Breakfast, Internet, and Fitness. HoJo is listed as 2.5* but may have changed? I have looked at that place, has 2 queen beds available whcih would be great for us as opposed to 2 doubles, as most places have.Money saved can go towards food and a show perhaps. We are willing to make that trade-off.Thx for any input on Id'ing the 2*Nick
thereuare Posted April 13, 2011 Report Posted April 13, 2011 I have been looking at some places in Long Island City that seem reasonable and well reviewed...This isn't one of them... with a 2.5/5.0 Tripadvisor rating this isn't a well reviewed property. If you're referring to the Howard Johnson in LIC, that property has a 4.0 TA rating so i don't think this 2* above is likely the HoJo. As well, while you may have had fine experiences at lower rated hotels elsewhere in the country, we really don't recommend it in the NYC metro area. While there may be hotels at the lower star ratings which are acceptable and meets your needs... there may be others which do not, and with PRICELINE and HOTWIRE you don't get to choose which type you will get. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Subbass32 Posted April 13, 2011 Author Report Posted April 13, 2011 Yes I agree. I have had decent luck in Ny but always with a place that I booked directly and could see pictures and read reviews. There is a 3 star Hotwire in LIC that appears it could be the Holiday Inn which also looks decent. Like you I have always had good results with Hotwire and Priceline by keeping the start level at least at 3, unless I was certain of the specific property I was booking.
