Walk to the heart of the historic/touristy attractions. It has a very old-world austerity to the decor of the common areas- lobby, halls, etc. Quite British. However, the rooms feel outdated. No air conditioning in the summer! I really can't even imagine how a 4.5 star hotel can get away with that. I couldn't believe it, a call downstairs confirmed if were were hot we were to open the window or use a fan in the closet. This place is enormous and on our way to the Health Center where the Pool/Spa is (a separate building attached, a long walk from room) we saw some rooms being cleaned and could tell that they were much, much nicer than ours. We were definitely staying in the D-list room. To be expected that Hotwire uses get the least nice of the rooms, but the difference in this case was surprising. Also, the fitness center rents passes to anyone in the city. So it's a bit more crowded than you would wish.Cool bar for a drink, like a fancy pub. Edinburgh is a very expensive city so this was still a great deal (especially since it was in USD), and the location is magic, but not quite as fabulous as you might hope for with that many stars.
