Priceline Hotel: First time bidder

My husband and I are going to NYC for one night on April 20th. We are taking the train to Penn Station. We would like a hotel close to there. I would like a 3 1/2 or 4 * for under 250. Is this reasonable? I am confused about the bidding strategy. We are going to see a show that night, so walking distance to Times Square would be nice. Walking distance 15 min walk or so. Can someone help give me an idea of the neighborhoods I should try and prices. I am very confused! Thanks for helping me!

In regards to this stay, rates are very high so i'll give my thoughts and you can let us know how you'd like to proceed...

While $250 may get you a hotel in the MTW or Times Square zone (close to Theater District) or the MSG zone (close to Penn Station), if you are successful, it will likely be close to your limit. The best bang for your buck will likely be Downtown, where HOTWIRE has a well reviewed 3.5* property for just $120/nite (best guess is the Club Quarters or the World Hotel)

While Downtown is not as convenient as midtown, it's certainly do-able, and for $100+ savings may be worthwhile. You can easily take the subway to the hotel upon your arrival and then take the subway to the theatre district... then take a taxi back at nite after the show... coming out way ahead in terms of savings.

So ultimately it comes down to budget vs. convenience.
