Mayiyan Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 I'm traveling to NYC with my mom, and we wanted to book a hotel from 4/24 to 5/01. We can pay at most $200 with taxes per night. Since it is our first time in the city, we have no idea about which areas are the best to stay at or to look for the best prices. We are willing to split the stay, if that is of any help!Could you give us a hand?
thereuare Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 Fortunately rates for this full week are less than the two nites of the first leg of your stay. The best bang for your buck appears to be in the Downtown zone where you can probably win a bid for a 3.5* hotel at $115 or less.. or take a $115/nite hotel from HOTWIRE (best guess would be the Club Quarters Wall St or the World Center hotel, although i'd tend to favor the former as more likely, you should be prepared for either as a possibility). HOWEVER, since you mention in your other thread that you're not this will be your first time in the city, note that the Downtown is certainly do-able, but not as convenient as midtown for the average visitor. Downtown will be quiet on the weekends and late at nite and is about a 20 minute subway ride to midtown. An equivalently rated midtown hotel will likely cost you near the upper end of your budget. So it comes down to cost vs. convenience.Let us know your thoughts and how you'd like to proceed and we'll take it from there. Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases. Mayiyan Posted April 3, 2011 Author Report Posted April 3, 2011 It doesn't matter if the rooms are small, we want something clean, nice and well located! And if it's a possible thing within our range, it will be awesome. In one word: convenience.
thereuare Posted April 3, 2011 Report Posted April 3, 2011 It doesn't matter if the rooms are small, we want something clean, nice and well located!I'm not talking about small rooms; some things you do will be located in downtown so for that you'll be nearby... other things (probably more so) will be located in midtown. So the question is whether a 20 minute subway ride to get to midtown is 'well located' enough, and in answering that question, would $60-$70/nite savings be worth the additional commute time?Just to bring home the point, we often say that Downtown is less convenient then midtown, but certainly do-able for the right price... in this instance i think the savings are worth the trade-off, but it's your stay and you have to make that determination yourself based upon your budget and the location of anything you have planned or intend to do for this trip.So given a downtown hotel for ~$115 and a midtown hotel for ~$175... which would you choose? Please use the PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links on the board to begin your travel purchases.
