I'm feeling like it's a bit early to be bidding this, based on the response below, but I'll toss it out hoping it helps others. Using your PRICELINE link, I bid the following:

4* CPS 105

+ CI 110

+ LIC 115

+QB 120

abandoned and restarted,

4* MTW 100

+ CPS 105

+ CI 110

+ LIC 115

+ QB 120

I have an acceptable backup at $169 (Courtyard Marriott Eastside, Lex&49th, also at the same price, Renaissance 57th), which comes to around $200/night with tax. I'd prefer to be nearer to the event we're going to on Friday (8th/49th) so I have several acceptable zones (TS, MTW, CS, MTE). I'd also not like to go over $125-130 on Priceline.... if I have to go over that I'd prefer to accrue hotel points via my backup. In the interest of full disclosure, I'm also willing to burn some hotel points for one night, and pay the going rate for the second night at the place I have for my backup. Choices, lol. I'll be working on this for awhile, and will keep this updated.

I think a 4* midtown hotel at this time of year is for $120 or less is going to be tough... we are currently seeing the W New York selling for $161/nite (for a 'cozy' room... pronounced 'small') and a larger room for $175/nite, which does seem low for this time of year, so maybe you'll get lucky and land something at $120 or less, but even the W Hotel is an 'outlier' and most other hotels are priced much higher.

I've decided I'm not necessarily a 4* snob, and have peeked at a few other possibilities. I'm open to the Hudson (hey, it's only two nights, and I can sell a sardine can as long as it's at a good location), and I'm also now open to ESB, MSG, and possibly Chelsea. My big deal is, I want to be near subway, so that rules out what it rules out (MTE 3.5). Truth be told, last year we stayed downtown/financial district quite inexpensively, and the two late night $20ish cab rides we took uptown and back downtown were worth the $, all else was subway. A good point to make for staying downtown is, that $18 sandwich in MTW/TS costs around $6 downtown, lol. I'll keep you posted. :)

If you let us know which zones you're willing to accept at the 3.5* level we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

I'll also add these two options:

HOTWIRE has a 3.5* Downtown for $110/nite if you're willing to stay down in that area again

HOTWIRE also has a 3.5* in the MTC for $149/nite, and while a little over your budget, it gets great reviews as evidenced by the 4.5/5/0 Tripadvisor rating and 95% recommendation by previous HOTWIRE guests.

Let us know how you'd like to proceed and/or if you'd like help with a bidding strategy (if you don't go with either of the HOTWIRE offers above)

I'm willing to play. My husband LOVES the Wall Street zone. I originally wanted Friday night near his get-together @ 49th&8th, but we stayed at Club Quarters Wall Street last year, and took a cab to his event and back, and that was not ideal, but it worked out just fine. Our actual travel dates are May 4-8. We arrive Newark airport near midnite on the 4th, so we're staying at the airport the night of the 4th. I had assumed I'd give the man his one night on Wall St on Thurs May 5, which would also mean very easy trip on the air train to Newark Penn to WTC on the PATH (and cheap, to boot, bypassing the $70 cab fare), and that we'd switch to midtown for Friday and Saturday nights. But I'm willing to throw the dog a bone and stay downtown the whole time. The subway is easy to get to down there, and we have all the time in the world to wander around doing nothing (since my husband grew up in the suburbs of NYC and I also lived there previously, we're more price conscious than attraction-driven since we've seen the sights).

I need Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights. I currently have a cancellable at Courtyard MTE at $169/night for those three nights. That's our worst case scenario, though if Thursday night continues to be high priced, I was willing to part with Hilton points to give him a night at Millenium Hilton on Thursday and bid for something midtown for Friday and Saturday. Obviously, if the price is right, I'd love to save those Hilton points for a future use.

I checked the hotwire since you mentioned it, and $110 for the two nights is fabulous. It's $126 for the 3 nights which is also in my ballpark especially since Thurs night skews the price up, so I'm going to take a peek at it again tomorrow afternoon. If I go that route I'll definitely use your links. I will say, my husband is not as willing to hotel hop nightly like I would be, so this might be a good compromise, not my favorite location but one he'd love and not have to hotel hop as much, and the price is still something I can sell as a bargain :)

Dates are not always interchangeable and the very cheap Downtown rates may only be available on the weekend nites... rates are still reasonable Downtown for 5/5-5/8 or 5/4-5/8, but not likely the very low rates of the $110 area. ($125-$130 may still be do-able for the complete stay)

Which dates are now looking to stay directly in Manhattan? Do you want to include the midtown zones you previously bid in your future bidding (along with Downtown) and having the one with the lowest acceptance price be the one to accept your bid? (or are you now looking to bid only Downtown)

Let us know the above and we'll suggest a strategy for you to follow.

Well, Thereuare.... I was to the very last screen of accepting that HOTWIRE 3.5* DT you mentioned, at the $126 for May 5-8, when I thought to myself, I should probably check priceline too, just to make myself feel better... all it took was one bid...

Sheraton Tribeca New York Hotel

370 Canal Street

New York, NY 10013

Check-In: Thursday, May 5, 2011-03:00 PM

Check-Out: Sunday, May 8, 2011-12:00 PM

Room Cost (avg. per room, per night): $110.00 (USD)

Number of Rooms: 1

Number of Nights: 3

Room Subtotal: $330.00 (USD)

Taxes and Fees: $78.36 (USD)

Total Room Cost: $408.36 (USD)

This is "saving" me around $180 as my cancellable hotel was $592ish for the 3 nights, so I won't feel guilty about any cab fare. As always, I used your PRICELINE and HOTWIRE links, and thank you so much for the idea. I'm pretty excited about the Tribeca area as we can walk to the Financial District and Chinatown/Little Italy, and the subway is right outside the hotel door for when we go uptown.
